One month ahead of its release, Insomniac Games' Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was announced to have gone gold, meaning the latest next-gen title can be expected to arrive on time.
The announcement was shared on Insomniac Games' Twitter, accompanied by a small in-game clip of one of the game's protagonists, with a PlayStation 5 trophy popup titled "Gone Gold!" The developers stated, "We're pleased to announce that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has Gone Gold ahead of its release on June 11th exclusively on PlayStation 5."
The media in the tweet showed off the newest protagonist in the series, a female lombax named Rivet. She will not be replacing the original Ratchet, however, as both characters have been shown to be playable in various gameplay clips. The story itself is set to serve as a sequel to Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, a PlayStation 3 title released in 2013. It also technically serves as a sequel to the 2016 game Ratchet & Clank, which served as a reboot of the original game alongside a tie-in movie.
It won't be the first game Insomniac has released for PS5, but it will be the first next-gen exclusive, as its previous game Spider-Man: Miles Morales was also available on the PlayStation 4. The game's release date falls exactly one year after its original announcement, as it was shown as the opener during the PlayStation 5 reveal livestream on June 11, 2020 via a seven-minute demo displaying its gameplay and graphics.
Going gold in the gaming industry is simply a term for the game, in both physical and digital form, arriving at its completed state, making it ready for distribution. Until a game is announced to have gone gold, it is not uncommon for a game's release date to get pushed back. An infamous recent example is Cyberpunk 2077, which suffered numerous delays ahead of launch. By contrast, Insomniac Games declared the game's June 11 release date back in February, and has maintained its intended course.
Rift Apart's gameplay feature that has seen the most promotion is the rapid load times between level shifts, which will include a variety of new and classic locations. As the title implies, various rifts in the game allow the player to almost instantaneously swap levels as a seamless part of the gameplay, capitalizing on the advanced hardware of the PS5. This will also include taking advantage of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback to give Rachet and Rivet's arsenals a unique feeling during combat.
Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart arrives on PlayStation 5 June 11.
