This August, Marvel Comics' Runaways hits 100 issues. And the House of Ideas is celebrating the occasion with a "giant-sized spectacular" by Rainbow Rowell, Andrés Genolet, Kris Anka and Runaways co-creator Adrian Alphona.
Runaways #38 -- the 38th issue of Rowell's run on the title and the 100th issue of Runaways overall -- is set to hit comic shops on Wednesday, Aug. 11. "They started as six normal teenagers brought together by the shocking revelation that their very parents were super villains and over the years, the Runaways have reinvented themselves time and time again, becoming one of Marvel's most beloved franchises," Marvel's press release reads.
"This August, the series will mark 100 issues and Marvel Comics is proud to celebrate the book’s legacy of incredible creators, dynamic cast of characters, and brilliant storytelling with a special giant-sized issue," it continues. "The 38th issue of author Rainbow Rowell’s critically acclaimed run, this landmark comic will feature art by series artist Andrés Genolet as well as Kris Anka and the return of the Runaways' co-creator, artist Adrian Alphona."
Marvel explains that since the very beginning, Runaways "has been known for its twists -- and the last few issues have revealed some of the biggest twists in the book's history. The 100th issue will be no exception and fans can expect big character redefining moments as this team of Marvel misfits embark on an exciting new era."
"Bringing Runaways back was a dream come true for me," said Rowell. "These kids are my favorite Marvel characters, and I felt like there were so many great stories we could tell with them. We'd have conversations when we were planning like, 'What can we do in six issues? What could we do in twelve? Could we get to eighteen? That would be amazing!' It's thrilling to be looking back now at 38 issues, and to see how each of the characters have grown. And it's such an honor to be part of the team that reached this milestone with them.
She continued "Everyone who worked on this book cared so much about the characters and the story we were telling. I knew when I signed on that I loved the Runaways, but I never thought I'd get this lucky with my collaborators. It's been a complete pleasure."
"This volume of Runaways is a high-water mark in my long time at Marvel," added Editor Nick Lowe. "This book and characters are incredible and it’s never too late to run away with us!"
Created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Alphona, Runaways launched in 2003, with the original series running for a total of 18 issues. A second volume launched in 2005 and ran for 30 issues, with a third volume arriving in 2008 and running for 14 issues. Marvel relaunched Runaways again in 2017 with Rowell at the helm, with the book's upcoming 38th issue bringing the title to a total of 100. It was also in 2017 that the Runaways got their own live-action television adaptation. Marvel's Runaways ran for a total of three seasons on Hulu, concluding in 2019. The show can be streamed in its entirety on both Hulu and Disney+.
The legacy numbering appears to exclude 2015's Runaways, a four-issue limited series published as part of the Secret Wars event. Nevertheless, Anka's cover for Runaways #38/Runaways #100 features the current team standing front and center, while the original Runaways loom large in the background.
Written by Rainbow Rowell and illustrated by Andrés Genolet, Kris Anka and Adrian Alphona, Runaways #38/Runaways #100 goes on sale Aug. 11 from Marvel Comics.
