Valve Reportedly Working on a Handheld Steam Console — the SteamPal

Valve is reportedly developing a handheld console system called the SteamPal.

According to gaming insider Pavel Djundik, a controller under the codename "Neptune" appears in the latest Steam client beta. Its real name is SteamPal, and the client beta also includes a reference to SteamPal Games. Djundik believes that this could be a handheld Steam console.

The update also includes indications of controller bindings, new UI strings — including quick access menu — system settings such as airplane mode, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and a power menu.

The report comes a few weeks after co-founder and president of Valve Gabe Newell held a questions and answers session at a public school, where he was asked about putting Steam games on consoles. "You will get a better idea of that by the end of this year," he teased.

Founded in 1996 by Newell and Mike Harrington, Valve is the developer of the gaming distribution platform Steam. It also creates its own games, including the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, Portal, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Left 4 Dead and Dota franchises.
