Vin Diesel Summarizes the First Fast and Furious Film in a Single Sentence

One of Dominic Toretto's signature philosophical quotes is how Fast and Furious star Vin Diesel continues to describe the franchise's first film, The Fast and the Furious, nearly twenty years later.

In a conversation with Diesel on Entertainment Weekly's new podcast 'EW's BINGE: The Fast Saga,' host Derek Lawrence questioned whether he could sum up the original Fast and Furious movie in ten seconds. "I live my life a quarter mile at a time," Diesel responded, a statement his character gave Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) during one of their first encounters. "I remember actually, the studio had I think a few years back, commented on that scene and said, 'If that scene was a tricky scene then.'"

Diesel continued, "And he said some actors might not have been able to pull that off. And if it didn't work, the whole franchise never would have worked. It was that moment that cemented the Fast and Furious into pop culture and then making it the world's up."

Diesel also implied that this line would come back in some form during the franchise's ninth movie, which will pit Dom against his estranged brother Jakob, played by John Cena. Without spoiling how it will happen, he revealed that "what's so exciting about F9, is we revisit that moment from a different perspective."

Dom's "quarter mile at a time" line was famously reiterated at the end of Furious 7 as part of a tribute to Paul Walker, who tragically died in 2013 from a car crash during production. While the first film was about an undercover cop infiltrating a crew of street racing thieves, Fast & Furious has since evolved over the past two decades into a series of globetrotting action blockbusters featuring a vehicular superhero-like team made up of characters from previous franchise entries.

This ongoing success has also resulted in two spinoffs debuting alongside the main timeline: 2019's Hobbes and Shaw starring franchise alumni Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, and the Netflix animated series Fast & Furious Spy Racers.

Directed by Justin Lin, F9 stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Helen Mirren, Kurt Russell and Charlize Theron. The film arrives in theaters June 25.
