Wonder Woman Turns Nina the Mask Into DC's Answer to Madame Hydra

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Sensational Wonder Woman #14, by Sanya Anwar, Eva de la Cruz and Travis Lanham on sale now.

Sensational Wonder Woman has thrown Diana of Themyscira into a very emotional and heartbreaking battle as she tracks a kidnapped Instagram model, Nina. Her son's missing too, leaving Diana mystified as to what caused this. She initially suspected Nina's husband, Brutus, of kidnapping and killing Nina, but as she starts piecing more clues together, Diana gets the shock of her life.

In Sensational Wonder Woman #14, the Amazonian princess realizes she eyed the wrong person for the crime and reveals that her true adversary is a villain strikingly similar to Marvel's Madame Hydra.

The mantle of Madame Hydra's has been worn by a few femme fatales after the character was introduced in the 80s to torment Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, recently seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, ran Hydra for a bit, elevating them as terrorists. Regardless of who holds the title, the character is known for manipulating events from the shadows, and nothing is ever as it seems.

Diana gets her own version of Madame Hydra thanks to Nina herself. The twist unfolds as Wonder Woman traces recent attacks on cyber bullies and on Nina's abusive mom who pressured her into stardom. Diana discerns that the only person who'd be interested in these people would be Nina herself, reaching the conclusion that Brutus will be the next target.

Nina harbors a hatred for Brutus not only because of how his pesticide company pollutes the planet, but also for making her a trophy wife. When Diana arrives, she ends up facing not only Nina, but an army of secret soldiers as well. She has no idea how Nina could muster up these contacts, but it's clear she's got this legion wrapped around her little finger.

Diana fights off the soldiers and makes it to the roof where Nina's trying to gas Brutus with his own pesticides. Wonder Woman wards her off but Nina makes it clear she's no longer an innocent model. She has become the sadistic figure leading this army, who even elects to leave her child behind in favor of her new life.

With a completely new attitude, Nina slips on a mask and elects to calls herself the "Mask," vowing revenge on everyone who has hurt her as she flies off in her chopper. In the epilogue, Brutus is hopeful she'll come back for their baby's sake but Diana knows that with such a powerful a legion, Nina may be way too far gone and onto bigger, nastier things in the DCU.
