Grand Theft Auto 6 Reportedly Returning to Vice City | CBR

Tom Henderson, a video game insider known for his leaks on upcoming titles, has stated that the next installment in the Grand Theft Auto franchise will see players return to Vice City.

As Henderson explains in his latest YouTube video, Grand Theft Auto VI will take place in an updated version of Vice City, the Miami-pastiche that serves as one of the settings of the first Grand Theft Auto and the 2002 PlayStation 2 game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The game will also feature a modern setting to make it more compatible with GTA Online, which remains a steady moneymaker for developer Rockstar Games. The game's map may not be as large as previous games' but Rockstar does plan to expand and change it through downloadable content and post-launch updates, similar to Fortnite's battle royale island.

In terms of characters, GTA VI will continue the trend established by its predecessor of having multiple playable protagonists. Notably, one of them will be a woman, a first for the series. According to Henderson, she will be "the bright one of the group," providing technological know-how. If true, this lends credence to the theory that the game will take place in a modern environment.

Henderson also provided the disappointing news that GTA VI may not be released until 2024 or 2025. The first reason provided for this extended development period is that Rockstar Games wants to avoid crunch, i.e. a period of forced overtime placed on developers ahead of a game's launch.

Henderson suggests that the second reason for Grand Theft Auto VI's long development time is because it will release exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. At present, next-gen consoles are extremely difficult for consumers to obtain and Rockstar wants to ensure a sufficient number of players have access to them before releasing their next game.

In addition, Henderson said that there is a plan to incorporate cryptocurrency into future GTA games. This doesn't mean that players will be able to trade in-game money for real-world cash, but rather it will be "another aspect of GTA in which you're going to be able to get mission rewards and stuff like that." Crypto may also figure into the story for GTA VI although how it will be implemented has yet to be confirmed.

Henderson concludes by reminding viewers that these are just rumors. His sources for information on GTA are not as reliable as the ones he has for Call of Duty or Battlefield games, as well as the fact that any potential new game at Rockstar is still in the early stages of development and may change over the course of the next few years.

Grand Theft Auto Online is available for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online launch for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 11.
