Famed in the Naruto world as the Copy Ninja, Kakashi Hatake is one of the most important characters in Masashi Kishimoto's story. Once the student of the legendary Fourth Hokage, he is a genius ninja who goes on to become the leader of Team 7.
Kakashi plays a significant role in the story moving forward and by its end, he eventually becomes the Sixth Hokage of Konohagakure. Although his life as a ninja ended on a high note, Kakashi has failed quite a bunch of times, despite being a prodigious shinobi.
10 He Failed To Add Nature Transformation To The Rasengan
Kakashi Hatake is one of the very few people capable of using the Rasengan. He learned the Rasengan under the tutelage of Minato Namikaze, the creator of the technique. However, given that the Rasengan was an incomplete technique, Kakashi's goal was to add lightning nature to it to create a stronger Jutsu. He might have failed at accomplishing this but, interestingly enough, this led to the creation of the Chidori instead.
9 Kakashi Couldn't Keep His Promise To Obito
The Third Great Ninja War saw Kakashi Hatake's life turn upside down as he lost two of his most precious friends, the first of which was Obito Uchiha. Before Obito was thought to have died, he asked Kakashi to protect Rin in his stead at all costs. Despite promising to give his life for her if need be, Kakashi failed to keep his word as Rin fell to the horrors of the Third Great Ninja War shortly after.
8 Kakashi Failed To Protect His Sharingan From Madara Uchiha
The Fourth Great Ninja War saw Kakashi's time as the Copy Ninja come to an end when he was ambushed by the Jinchuriki of the Ten-Tails, Madara Uchiha. Madara ripped Kakashi's Sharingan from him and used it to transport himself to the Kamui dimension where Obito and Sakura were. Kakashi's failure to protect the Sharingan led to Madara getting his hand on the second Rinnegan to obtain even more power. Thankfully, Naruto was able to restore Kakashi's left eye using his Yin-Yang Release.
7 He Failed To Protect Kushina & Minato
Soon after the Fourth Great Ninja War, Kakashi Hatake was asked by Minato to guard Kushina Uzumaki while she was pregnant. Although he completed his mission, he unknowingly allowed information about Naruto's delivery to reach Obito, which played a part in Kushina's death.
In an attempt to protect Naruto, Minato Namikaze also ended up dying after he made his son the Jinchuriki of the Nine-Tails. Once again, Kakashi could do nothing but lament his failure to protect them.
6 Kakashi Failed To Stop Orochimaru From Pursuing Sasuke
Orochimaru's pursuit of Sasuke Uchiha started in the Chunin Exams arc of Naruto as it was around the time when he needed to change his vessel. As the leader of the team, it was Kakashi's responsibility to stop any harm from coming to his students. Even when Kakashi came face-to-face with Orochimaru, he was too scared to do anything, and eventually, the latter succeeded in his goals to take the young Uchiha under his wing.
5 Kakashi Failed To Defeat Itachi Uchiha
Kakashi clashed against Itachi Uchiha shortly after the death of the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Although he was strong in his own right, he stood absolutely no chance against Itachi in combat. Not only did he fail to keep up with his movements, but he also couldn't see through his Genjutsu skills either. Had Itachi not retreated, things would've gone from bad to worse for Kakashi, along with Asuma and Kurenai.
4 Kakashi Failed To Stop Sasuke Uchiha From Leaving The Village
Perhaps one of Kakashi's biggest failures was being unable to stop Sasuke from leaving the village. Kakashi picked up Sasuke's thirst for vengeance quite early on and instead of helping him, all he did was tell him to give up on revenge.
Needless to say, this didn't work. Sasuke realized he needed more power to defeat Itachi and left the village to train with Orochimaru, one of the strongest characters in the story at the time.
3 He Failed To Defeat Pain When Konoha Was Attacked
Kakashi Hatake fought against the leader of the Akatsuki, Pain, when he attacked the village in search of the Nine-Tails. While he wasn't as strong as Pain, Kakashi put up a decent fight against him, all thanks to his clever strategies in combat. Unfortunately, it amounted to nothing as he lacked what it took to defeat Pain and lost the fight. His last bit of chakra was spent while trying to protect Choji from one of the Pain bodies.
2 Kakashi Failed To Stop Naruto & Sasuke From Fighting Each Other
After Sasuke left the village, Naruto Uzumaki and a few members of Konoha 11, led by Shikamaru Nara, attempted to retrieve him before he reached Orochimaru's hideout. Eventually, Naruto and Sasuke fought each other at the Valley of the End, at the end of which Naruto was defeated. Kakashi attempted to make it in time and stop the two from fighting but unfortunately, by the time he arrived, Sasuke had already left Naruto laying there, defeated.
1 He Played A Part In The Death Of Rin Nohara
Kakashi Hatake attempted to rescue Rin from the Kirigakure shinobi in the Third Great Ninja War, however, she had already been made the Jinchuriki of the Three-Tails by then. Knowing that she posed a threat to the village, Rin decided to take her own life by jumping in front of Kakashi's Chidori. Although Kakashi didn't intend to kill Rin, the fact it happened at his hands haunted him for years to come and he considered this act to be one of his biggest failures in life.
