His Dark Materials Begins Final Season Production With BTS Photo

Production is underway on the third and final season of HBO and BBC One's His Dark Materials series.

HBO announced the news by releasing a behind-the-scene photo featuring stars Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson. The eight-episode season is based on the 2000 novel The Amber Spyglass, the final entry in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials book trilogy. This is referenced on the clapboard Wilson is shown holding.

Newly-confirmed cast members for His Dark Materials Season 3 include Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Lost) as Commander Ogunwe; Jamie Ward (Tyrant) as Father Gomez; Kobna Holdbrook-Smith (Zack Snyder’s Justice League), Simon Harrison (Everest) and Chipo Chung (Into the Badlands) as the rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch and Xaphania; and Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe as Ama. They are joined by Keen and Wilson, along with Seasons 1 and 2 veterans Ruth Wilson, Simone Kirby, Will Keen, Jade Anouka, Ruta Gedminstas and James McAvoy.

Filming on Season 3 will take place at Wolf Studios Wales stages and on location throughout Wales and England. Directors include Amit Gupta (Thanks for the Memories), Charles Martin (Marcella) and Weronika Tofilska (The Irregulars), with head writer Jack Thorne penning the season alongside Season 2 scribe Francesca Gardiner and Amelia Spencer.

Per the official logline, Season 3 "will see Will, the bearer of The Subtle Knife, and Lyra, the prophesied child, travel through multiple worlds to find and protect each other."

“‘The Amber Spyglass’ is the most gloriously complex of Philip Pullman’s novels to adapt for TV but with our world class creative team in Cardiff no challenge is too daunting," said executive producer and Bad Wolf founder Jane Tranter. "This season is both an epic adventure and a story about love and truth. Jack, Francesca and Amelia’s scripts capture the brilliance of Philip’s worlds and we are joined by our much-loved existing cast and some exceptional talent new to the series.”

His Dark Materials Season 3 stars Dafne Keen as Lyra, Amir Wilson as Will Parry, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, Simone Kirby as Mary Malone, Will Keen as Father President McPhail, Jade Anouka as Ruta Skadi, Ruta Gedminstas as Serafina Pekkala, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Commander Ogunwe, Jamie Ward as Father Gomez, Amber Fitzgerald-Woolfe as Ama, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Simon Harrison and Chipo Chung as the rebel angels Balthamos, Baruch and Xaphania. It has yet to receive a premiere date.
