How The Mosquito Coast Sets Up Season 2 | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Mosquito Coast Season 1, Episode 7, "The Glass Sandwich," on Apple TV+.

Apple TV's The Mosquito Coast really threw Allie (Justin Theroux) into disarray as he had to flee America for Mexico. It turns out, his past as an eco-terrorist caught up, but as the Foxes clawed their way across the border, it got even more dangerous with the NSA, as well as the cartel trying to get their hands on them.

Luckily, they've managed to slip out of everyone's clutches, but as they speed off in a boat, some key threads set up a deadly Season 2.

Season 1 had Allie trying to find his associates -- namely the leader known as Calaca -- in order to gain safe haven. He found out that a new leader took over and the hub's moved to Guatemala. As a result, Allie has to get his family there to the new Calaca, so Season 2 can dissect how this boat trip goes. They're short of money and resources, so it'll be interesting to see how they garner these necessities.

The NSA agents were killed while trying to bring them in, so we can see law enforcement coming after them relentlessly. Charlie killed one of the people hunting them, so the federales will also be seeking them out. It could result in Calaca's agents taking a hands-on approach to help out their own. However, if they come to take Allie's family in from the wilderness, it'll just add more traction to the crew which can even lead to betrayal as the Foxes can be used as bargaining chips with the U.S. government.

Lucrecia and her cartel tried to do this, bartering Allie to get one of their own back, but it failed. In the mission, Margot disabled their fleet, made them look like fools and almost got Lucrecia's grandson killed. As such, Lucrecia may want to send more assassins after them, as Bill and his minions, which include street kids, haven't gotten the job done so far.

The fact that the NSA agents were killed would mean Lucrecia has to act fast and cover up the trail in a discreet manner. Other cartels could get involved as well, adding more of a Narcos and Sicario flair to the story. The person Margot helped escape the cartel, Chuy, could possibly return as an ally too. He hates Allie but has feelings for Margot, and given that he needs to protect his own daughter from his former employer in Lucrecia, an alliance can be struck up.

Season 1 ended with Allie crying as he looked at a sunset, laughing delusionally, so his family can see that he's breaking. It may work to their benefit as he constantly endangered them, with Margot wanting to go back to America and turn herself in so the kids can go free. But with Charlie wanted, especially after a prison break, it's gotten more complicated. Still, Margot could use her parents and their money to try to broker a deal, even if it means selling Allie out.

Dina also lost faith in Allie, and while Charlie believed in his dad, he's now in the same mindset as his sister. It'll be interesting seeing Allie trying to win them back -- especially the boy. This shapes a high-octane domestic dispute, and Allie, a genius inventor, might not be able to fix the problem. It leaves fans wondering if he'll ever consider ditching his family, or if he even realizes that they want away from him to gain anything close to a normal life.

Starring Justin Theroux, Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman, The Mosquito Coast airs Fridays on Apple TV+.
