Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie Reveals New Image and Premiere Date

A new promotional image has been released for Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie ahead of its upcoming December premiere.

Revealed via Twitter, the new image depicts the protagonist of the Jujutsu Kaisen prequel, Yuta Okkotsu, and his childhood friend, Rika. Set to premiere on Dec. 24, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie is an adaptation of the original 2017 Shonen Jump mini-series by Gege Akutami, which was so well-received that it  inspired a sequel in the form of the current Jujutsu Kaisen series. The movie will be animated by studio MAPPA, which also animated the first season of the Jujutsu Kaisen anime series, as well as other popular anime such as Attack on Titan, Kakegurui and Yuri on Ice.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 tells the story of Yuta Okkotsu, who is haunted by the spirit of the girl he once loved, Rika. Unfortunately for Yuta, Rika's spirit has become a Curse, a malevolent spirit that feeds on the negative emotions of humanity. While Rika's spirit originally wanted to protect Yuta, it has now become a violent monster that hurts anyone who gets close to him. Yuta goes into a self-imposed exile until he is brought to Jujutsu High, where he is taught the skills needed to bring Rika under control and use their combined abilities to fight other Curses and protect humanity. While the prequel does not feature Jujutsu Kaisen protagonist Yuji Itadori, many other characters from the main series, such as Satoru Gojo and Toge Inumaki, appear in the story.

The film was originally revealed immediately after the finale of Season 1 of the popular anime series. While it was recently announced that the manga series will soon go on an indefinite hiatus due to concerns over creator Gege Akutami's health, production has continued on Season 2 of the anime, which currently has no officially confirmed release date.

Season 1 of Jujutsu Kaisen is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll and HBO Max.
