The MCU is beloved for its stunning superheroes, such as the witty but brilliant Iron Man, the noble Captain America, and the suave spy Black Widow. But of course, these heroes need powerful villains to fight for there to be a great story, and the MCU features some compelling and even somewhat sympathetic antagonists, such as the crafty Loki and even the mad titan, Thanos.
However, there are other villains in the MCU who are not sympathetic for one reason or another, and absolutely no one would ever root for these characters. These villains have committed serious atrocities that negate any goodwill they might have generated, and/or they have cruel and selfish goals or they have a perspective that no MCU fan could possibly relate to or understand.
10 Obidiah Stane Wanted To Keep Building Weapons, Peace Be Damned
Obidiah Stane was Tony Stark's friend and business partner, and he never had the change of heart that Tony experienced in Afghanistan. Obidiah is all about the arms business, and once Tony started fighting for peace, Obidiah decided "I've got to take over."
Obidiah even turned on Tony and stole his arc reactor heart, leaving Tony for dead (Pepper Potts rescued him). Obidiah then mounted up in a bulky Iron Man suit of his own, and fought Tony to the bitter end. No one will sympathize with someone who betrayed his friend for the sake of building yet more weapons.
9 Justin Hammer Was Petty & Envious Of Tony's Success
Justin Hammer was like a pint-sized Tony Stark, a wealthy and well-dressed designer of gadgets and weapons. However, he was not a hero at heart, and during the events of Iron Man 2, he kept sinking lower and lower, and showed what a despicable personality he has, too.
Justin was defined almost entirely by his petty and obnoxious behavior and his envy of Tony Stark, and he first sided with James Rhodes (nothing against Rhodey), then Ivan Vanko, the movie's main villain. Justin has no excuse for all this.
8 Ivan Vanko/Whiplash Tried To Take Tony Out
Ivan Vanko, at least on one level, had a reason to act the way he did. His father Anton Vanko was once a scientist until Howard Stark took everything from him (according to Ivan), and the Vankos had little left to their name. When Anton died, his adult son Ivan took it upon himself to strike back at the Stark family.
It's one thing to be bitter about all that, but Ivan used his scientific genius for destruction and revenge, rather than trying to make people's lives better with his inventions. He had a one-track mind for deadly revenge, and that, combined with a lack of positive personality traits, made him impossible to like.
7 Malekith Lost Everything & Wanted To Bring Darkness Back
Malekith suffered great loss several thousand years ago, and no one can blame him for being bitter about that. After all, he lost nearly his entire race, and even his wife and son. But MCU fans can blame him for just about everything else.
This dark elf ruler wanted to envelop the entire universe in darkness, and conquer every world he could. He brought about the death of Thor's mother, Frigga, in Thor: the Dark World, and nearly conquered the universe as planned. There's no forgiving that.
6 Ronan The Accuser Sought Even More Power
Ronan the Accuser was a Kree man with a massive chip on his shoulder. It's true that he lost his father, grandfather and great-grandfather in battle and seeks to avenge them, but he quickly established himself as an unsympathetic villain during the events of Guardians of the Galaxy.
Ronan was brutal and merciless towards the Guardians of the Galaxy and the people of Xandar, and sought to use the Might Stone to destroy everything, ever. It doesn't matter how many family members Ronan lost in previous generations; he's nothing but a war-mongering thug.
5 Darren Cross/Yellowjacket Was A Villainous Businessman
Darren Cross is a businessman, like Tony Stark and Justin Hammer, and he is a ruthless schemer to the end. He coveted the Pym particles for himself, and he crossed all kinds of ethical lines in terms of business and science alike to get what he wanted.
Darren, or Yellowjacket, was Hank Pym's mortal enemy and rival, and he would even kill people in cold blood to cover his tracks or achieve his goals. It's one thing to try and get ahead in the business world, but this is unforgivable. No one should follow his example.
4 Crossbones Went From Bad To Worse As A Terrorist
Brock Rumlow once worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. and HYDRA, and he was, on the surface, an ally of Captain America during the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But in reality, he was a villain, and he had no grand cause or sympathetic angle to anything he was doing.
Instead, Crossbones sought to sow chaos and mayhem everywhere he went, and he survived a near-death experience to become a vicious terrorist. He was finally taken down in Lagos at the hands of the Avengers.
3 Alexander Pierce Was A Scheming Monster
For a time, the suited gentleman Alexander Pierce seemed to be a hero, or at least a good guy, and he was a member of the World Peace Council and S.H.I.E.L.D. as well. But all that was just a cover; he really worked for HYDRA, and he was a HYDRA villain in every way imaginable.
Alexander was outwardly professional and polite, but he schemed to conquer the globe, and aimed to use gunships and Project Insight to further those goals. He had no sense of compassion or humanity at all; it was all about world domination, HYDRA style.
2 Red Skull Tried To Use Science For Conquest & Evil
The villainous Red Skull is a classic villain of the Captain America storylines, and he is indeed a villain to the bone. Red Skull worked with both the HYDRA organization and the Third Reich to build the ultimate army and weapons to conquer the Earth, and that firmly established him as a heartless monster.
Red Skull also proved that science can be used either for great things or horrible ends, and he was convinced that with his cutting-edge war toys, the world would be his. Red Skull is also interested in Nazi ideology, and that alone makes him absolutely unsympathetic. Good thing Captain America took him down.
1 Dormammu Was A Giant Space Monster
Dormammu was Dr. Stephen Strange's enemy during the Dr. Strange movie, and what a foe he was. Dormammu wasn't human or even an organic being; rather, he was an inter-dimensional entity and the ruler of the Dark Dimension, a being totally dedicated to destruction and ruthlessness.
Even cold-blooded thugs like Red Skull and Alexander Pierce have a tiny shred of humanity to them, but Dormammu is on a whole different plane, and no MCU fan could ever relate to Dormammu on any meaningful level whatsoever.
