Link Click: Cheng Xiaoshi & Lu Guang's Time-Traveling Is Exposed

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Link Click Episode 7, "Aunt May," now streaming on Funimation.

Up to this point, Link Click has strayed from getting too deep into the consequences of time traveling, focusing more on the emotional aspects of its storytelling. Each story arc has the Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang going back in time to do investigations for their clients which are usually business-like in nature but have a more personal undertone.

The current story arc is no exception but with law enforcement now involved in Episode 7, Link Click's time-traveling duo must be more careful than ever in hiding their abilities.

Lu Guang is usually very cautious in guiding Cheng Xiaoshi around, but he isn't quick enough to shout out a warning before his partner bumps into Qiao Ling -- three years in the past. In his panic, all Cheng Xiaoshi can do is run from her. With the neighborhood being much older, a lot of the surveillance cameras are broken and Lu Guang's field of vision is limited, explaining why he can't find the person who kidnapped Doudou.

Cheng Xiaoshi returns to the present with disappointing news to Liang, Doudou's father. Qiao Ling apologizes profusely to Liang for not stopping the kidnapper from taking Doudou when she saw him that day. Despite this, the father hasn't given up hope -- he's certain his son is still alive and waiting for him. Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang offer to help and ask Liang if he has any more photos of Doudou. A picture that the boy took of his action figure on the day of his kidnapping catches Cheng Xiaoshi's eye. With this, he might be able to see his kidnapper's face and catch them once and for all.

Cheng Xiaoshi is sent back to when Doudou was watching cartoons outside of his parents' shop. A ball rolls to a stop at his feet and he picks it up, where a suspicious-looking middle-aged woman is watching him. There's something odd about this ball: Cheng Xiaoshi catches a whiff and it smells sweet. Lu Guang's warning shout comes too late before Cheng Xiaoshi gets drugged. With his head dizzy, he allows himself to get dragged away. Interestingly, Episode 7 has Link Click's timelines clash: Cheng Xiaoshi as Doudou passes by Qiao Ling just as she meets Cheng Xiaoshi from when he first tried to time travel.

When he comes to, Lu Guang tells him that they're now in a hostel and a different city, with the human trafficker sleeping in the bed next to him. That significantly shortens the time Cheng Xiaoshi has to find the human trafficker's identity. Trying to be as quiet as possible, he rummages through her handbag and finds her identity card but it's tangled in a talisman. Just as he's trying to memorize her ID number, the talisman wakes the woman up.

Without thinking, Cheng Xiaoshi jumps up, knocking out one of her teeth with an undercut to the chin. She's furious and threatens to dismember him, but it doesn't faze him. Lu Guang has a proud smile on his face as he listens to Cheng Xiaoshi use her superstitions against her and declares that justice will be served in three years. If she doesn't want to go to hell and suffer more, she will do well to not mistreat Doudou.

Link Click brings the story full circle as Cheng Xiaoshi returns to the present. Thanks to his actions, Doudou soon reunites with his parents. Doudou is understandably wary and scared but something catches his eye: Cheng Xiaoshi, Lu Guang, and Qiao Ling are wearing the Triple Star Warriors masks. Liang apologizes to Doudou for coming back so late because he was looking for the Triple Star Warriors. Finally, Doudou runs to his father and hugs him.

Just as one mystery wraps up with a happy ending, it's revealed that Cheng Xiaoshi's brief stint of time-traveling as himself exposed him and Lu Guang to the police officer, who caught a blur of him running on the surveillance cameras. Instead of punishing them though, he requests their help in a murder case.

Lu Guang stops Cheng Xiaoshi from accepting the task. He opens the proffered envelope and his eyes narrow as he sees a familiar face: Emma's eyes, empty and haunting. We'll have to wait until Link Click Episode 8 to see if the two will help with Emma's case -- and what Cheng Xiaoshi's reaction will be upon finding out the girl he thought he helped is now dead.
