Fans once again obsessing over the potential arrival of the villainous Mephisto in the MCU can stop hoping for a devilish debut on Loki.
Director Kate Herron and head writer Michael Waldron spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the upcoming Disney+ series, which kicks off tomorrow night. During the interview, they were asked whether a stained-glass portrait of Satan spotted in one of the show's trailers last year was a possible nod to Mephisto, who fans long theorized would appear on WandaVision. Not only did Herron shoot down the idea, but she also explained why any Devil details on the show are actually all about the trickster himself.
"It's honestly just a super weird coincidence," Herron said. "Like, it's genuinely a reference to Loki -- the horns, he was cast out of heaven, that's what it's a reference to. Because we filmed that a long time before -- I think WandaVision must have been in post when we filmed that. I did see all the stuff about that online and I was like, 'Oh, this is going to be interesting.' [Laughs] But no, it's more relevant to the themes of our show and it's not a nod to that character."
While Mephisto won't be making his debut anytime soon, that doesn't mean Marvel Studios doesn't have some secret plans for the character, especially given how popular he's proven to be in discussions about the MCU. And it's not just the fans who are intrigued by the prospect of his arrival and what it could mean.
"Mephisto, I was just reading about that character. It's pretty interesting," Waldron added. "It would be interesting if he ever showed up in the MCU."
Despite Herron taking the air out of this particular theory, fans haven't missed the mark on all of their speculations. Loki will be genderfluid on the show, just like in the comics, something audiences long suspected would make its way into the MCU. Whether or not that confirms the arrival of Lady Loki, only time will tell.
Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15 and Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane and Eugene Cordero in undisclosed roles. The series premieres June 9 on Disney+.
