Loki: Hiddleston Promises His Iconic Horns Will Be Explained

Tom Hiddleston promised that Marvel's Loki series will finally explain why the actor's God of Mischief wears horns in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During a Loki press junket attended by CBR, the show's cast and crew talked about the "Loki Lectures," which costar Owen Wilson described as Hiddleston walking him through Loki's MCU mythology. "I do remember people wanted to know about the horns. I do remember that," said Hiddleston. "There was a question of when does Loki wear the horns? Why does he wear them? Is it a ceremonial thing? Or are they somehow an extension of some emotional intention, but he's particularly malevolent at those times. And it was kind of interesting to be asked these questions from outside the experience. All becomes clear in time."

Hiddleston's Loki has worn his horns on multiple occasions, including the MCU films Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017). Some fans speculate this is a nod to the character's deceptive and chaotic nature, much like the Christian version of Satan is depicted as having horns. Other theorize it's tied to Loki being the biological son of Laufey, the ruler of the Frost Giants. In the Marvel Comics Universe, the Frost Giants wear helmets with horns.

According to Loki director Kate Herron, the series will dive deeply into the God of Mischief's complicated nature and sense of identity. "In terms of the themes, I love gray areas. The show is really about what makes someone truly good or what makes someone truly bad, and are we either of those things? Loki is in that grey area," she explained.

In a separate interview, Herron said she was encouraged by Marvel Studios President and Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige to delve into the weirder aspects of the Loki character/world. "Something I always found was we would sometimes pitch something, and it would be at a good place, but he'd always be like, 'Okay, that's great, but push it further,'" she noted. "Sometimes I'd pitch stuff and be like, 'This is too weird,' and he'd say, 'No, go weirder.'"

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Lexus Renslayer, Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15 and Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane and Eugene Cordero in undisclosed roles. The series premieres June 9 on Disney+.
