Luca: Maya Rudolph Compares the Pixar Film to Summer Camp | CBR

Luca star Maya Rudolph recently compared the Pixar film, which centers on two sea monsters in Italy, to her memories of summer camp.

At a press conference attended by CBR, Rudolph explained, "I did a lot of summer camp, and those are the most heavenly, sweet memories. You know, just warm nights, I think, might be my favorite part." She continued, "But those friendships that you make, that's the familiarity of this movie that feels so sweet and so instantly connective -- like the friends that I made at camp, that we don't live in the same city. We don't see each other during the year. Then you have those people that you just hook into and you fall in love in the best, most lovely, possible way. 'Cause you see those things in each other, and it's just kinda like summertime romance."

Co-star Jim Gaffigan added that the film's summer setting will resonate with kids and adults alike, purely due to the way it is percieved. "As adults, we have such an expectation of or a pressure surrounding summer, like enjoying summer. I think some of that's established as kids, really, having this idealized summer. I feel like in this movie there is capturing that truly romantic notion of summer being about freedom. As adults, we kind of chase it. We chase it in these two-week windows of vacation or a long weekend."

Directed by Enrico Casarosa, Luca stars Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Emma Berman, Maya Rudolph, Marco Barricelli and Jim Gaffigan. The film is available for streaming now on Disney+
