Rick and Morty Season 5 Should Bring Back Birdperson | CBR

Rick and Morty's Birdperson is one of the more strange and unique characters birthed from the wacky universe of the critically acclaimed Adult Swim series. Given the colorful history of the bird-man hybrid -- his marriage, death and rebirth -- Birdperson is too rich of a fan favorite to not bring back in Season 5. With high hopes for the character's return, here is a full breakdown of Rick's fatal, flapping friend.

Although his origins are unknown, Birdperson is a longtime friend of Rick Sanchez. Based on their conversations, the two characters seem to share a deep bond filled with a rich, abundant history filled with drunken debauchery and time in their band, The Flesh Curtains. Birdperson also fought alongside Rick in the wars against the cosmic government known as the Galactic Federation -- in which Rick saved Birdperson's life, strengthening their bond.

The deadpan bird-man is introduced in the Season 1 episode, "Ricksy Business," where he attends one of Rick's parties in search of a soul mate and ends up with Summer's friend Tammy. Birdperson and Tammy eventually tie the knot in Season 2's "The Wedding Squanchers," where the couple is wed on the planet Squanch.

Romance appears to be in the space air until Tammy reveals herself to be an undercover agent of the Galactic Federation, and all hell breaks loose. Naturally, things become worse as the space government is dispatched to ambush the wedding party, leaving Birdperson to be gunned down and murdered in front of his old friend Rick.

The madness continues in the Season 4 finale, "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri," which sees Tammy lead the Galactic Federation with Beth's clone, Space Beth, to kidnap Rick's real daughter. This results in a vengeful Rick heading into battle against the Federation at their space station to thwart evil government once and for all. At the Federation headquarters, Rick is attacked by a newly resurrected Birdperson -- a brainwashed cyborg version of his old friend, now reconstructed with the new identity: Phoenixperson. A deadly fight ensues between Rick and Phoenixperson, with Rick nearly killed until Jerry and Space Beth intervene to shut Phoenixperson down.

Rick, overridden with guilt after putting his friends and family at great risk once again, takes it upon himself to utilize what's left of Phoenixperson's remains to restore his old companion. Once rebooted, Phoenixperson recognizes Rick as hostile, leaving him to be shut down once more. In keeping with Rick and Morty's signature bleak endings, Rick is left alone without his friends to close out Season 4. However, with Phoenixperson's parts still in Rick's possession, it's possible Rick and Morty Season 5 will see the -- hopefully triumphant -- return of Birdperson.

Rick and Morty stars the voices of Justin Roiland, Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer and Sarah Chalke. Season 5 premieres Sunday, June 20 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Adult Swim.
