Star Wars: Emilia Clarke Denies Qi'ra's Involvement in the Lando Series

Emilia Clarke played down the idea of her reprising her Solo: A Star Wars Story character Qi’ra in Disney+'s Lando Calrissian limited event series.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Clarke said she's pleased to learn Solo is gaining a larger following on streaming and home media after the movie bombed at the box office in 2018, stating, "That makes me so happy because I loved Qi’ra. Loved her, really really did. I loved Han; I loved the story; I loved the people; I loved the experience."

Solo went through a much-publicized change in directors in June 2017, when original helmers Phil Lord and Chris Miller left the film over creative differences with just three weeks left of shooting. They were replaced by Ron Howard, who reshot the majority of the movie, causing its budget to balloon to $275-300 million. It debuted to favorable, if lukewarm, reviews, but only grossed $393.2 million, an all-time low for a live-action Star Wars film.

"Everyone went in knowing what our dirty laundry looked like," Clarke noted. "And you couldn’t separate that gossip from the overall experience, but I’m so over the moon that people are posthumously enjoying it."

That said, Clark denied knowing anything about the Lando limited event series announced at Disney's Investor Day in Dec. 2020. “I’ve heard nothing. Absolutely nothing," she claimed, making it clear she doesn't expect Qi'ra to play a role on the show. "But a ‘Lando’ show makes so much sense; give that man his own show! Yes!"

The Lando series is being developed by Justin Simien, the writer/director of the 2014 satirical dramedy Dear White People and creator of Netflix's series adaptation, as well as the filmmaker behind the 2020 horror/comedy Bad Hair. However, Lucasfilm has yet to reveal any casting or plot details for the series. As such, it's unclear if the show will focus on Billy Dee Williams as older Lando or Donald Glover as the younger version of the con artist/playboy-turned Rebel leader featured in Solo, if not a combination of the two.

Along with Lando, Lucasfilm is working on the Rogue One prequel series Andor and Obi-Wan Kenobi, a limited event series centered on the titular Jedi Master's adventures living in exile on Tatooine between the Prequel and Original Star Wars Trilogies. Both shows are slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2022.
