The Conjuring 3 Comic Reveals the Origin of the Series' Latest HORRIFIC Curse

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, now in theaters and on HBO Max, and TDC Horror Presents: The Conjuring: The Lover #1 from David L. Johnson-McGoldrick, Rex Ogle, Garry Brown, Mike Spicer and Becca Carey, on sale now.

In The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, the villain is revealed to be the Occultist, an evil witch who's seeded out a curse that not only possessed young David in Connecticut but one which jumped into his would-be brother-in-law, Arne. This demon caused Arne to murder his landlord and plays off of real-world events where he stood trial for murder, leaving the defense to make the outlandish that demonic possession caused it.

However, the film didn't go deep into why the sorceress targeted her victims. Thankfully, The Conjuring: The Lover #1 reveals the real origin of the curse and lays the foundation down for its transfer.

In this story, young Jessica is attending university in Danvers, but she's disenchanted. Her mom's visiting and begs her to focus again, but Jess wants to follow her bestie, Katie, who took time off to work. Her mom's adamant Katie will be a town failure so she doesn't want Jess adopting the same mindset. She even urges her to pursue a relationship with a boy, Kyle, that's into her but Jess is distracted.

Her tale's interspersed with the witch creating the totem that appears in the film, made with a goat's head and other horrific elements. As Jessica trudges along with life, the witch haunts her from the shadows, using things like rats to scare her. Still, she's distracted, especially as Kyle keeps trying to get with her. All she can focus on is Katie, their time at the cliff in the woods and a friendship bracelet she got from Katie, hinting at their romantic interest.

After stalking her in the library and while doing her laundry, the witch ends the issue by having the demon go after Jess in her dorm. It calls Jess' name and preps to possess her before the story ends. This creates room for speculation with the film out as we know Jess eventually ends up stabbing Katie to death and then falling off that very same cliff, drowning in the lake below.

Lorraine Warren would use her sight beyond sight to view all this, and she'd later figure out the witch used a totem at Jess' home similar to one at David's house. However, her reasons have yet to be revealed, apart from the witch wanting human sacrifices and souls for Satan.

This could tie into the Disciples of the Ram satanic cult from the Annabelle series. They're mentioned to Lorraine by an ex-priest in this film, with the witch learning their ways to hone her craft, and Kyle could even be part of that group. Only time will tell if they were official members, but it's clear that the sorceress knows the freshman is mentally vulnerable and a perfect vessel.

Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It stars Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ruairi O'Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook and Julian Hilliard. The film is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
