Army of Thieves Release Date, Trailer & Plot | CBR

Zack Snyder's zombie heist movie Army of the Dead was a big hit for Netflix when it released earlier in 2021, so it only makes sense for its universe to be expanded. The film's success paved the way for Army of Thieves, a prequel starring one of its breakout characters, Ludwig Dieter. The movie will show how Dieter became the master safecracker audiences meet in Army of the Dead, while also displaying some of the early days of the zombie outbreak.

Here's everything we currently know about the upcoming prequel.

The official synopsis for the film reads:

In this prequel to Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.

In an interview with IndieWire, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder revealed that Army of Thieves will be a romantic comedy heist set near the beginning of the zombie outbreak. Deborah Snyder has compared it to the iconic 2003 heist film The Italian Job and stated that the outbreak has been "causing instability in the banking institutions. They're moving money around, so it's the perfect opportunity for a heist."

The Snyders have confirmed that zombies will appear in Army of Thieves but will not be a major focus, and the movie will largely be a standalone story. This makes sense considering the film will be depicting the earlier days of the outbreak. Instead, the origins of the zombie pandemic will be explored in depth in the animated prequel series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.

Army of Thieves will star Matthias Schweighöfer, who will be reprising his role as Ludwig Dieter in addition to taking on directing duties. During a Q&A in April, Zack Snyder stated that the film will show "how [Dieter] fell in love with and got obsessed with cracking safes." Fast and Furious series veteran Nathalie Emmanuel will also star as Gwendoline, the mysterious woman who recruits Dieter to join her heist team. Joining them will be comedian Guz Khan as Rolph, actor Ruby O. Fee as Korina, and Scottish actor Stuart Martin as Brad Cage.

In addition to Schweighöfer, other crew members returning from Army of the Dead include writer Shay Hatten and composer Tom Holkenborg, better known as Junkie XL. Zack and Deborah Snyder will also be returning as producers.

Army of Thieves is scheduled to be released sometime in 2021. The exact date announced has yet to be announced, but Zack Snyder has recently confirmed that it is "coming soon." As with Army of the Dead and Lost Vegas, the film will be releasing exclusively on Netflix.

Army of Thieves' teaser trailer was unveiled July 25, 2021, at a Comic-Con@Home panel. Prior to the panel, Zack Snyder revealed two posters, one of which alludes to the prequel having "less zombies"  than Army of the Dead. At the panel itself, a third poster was unveiled in addition to the teaser trailer.
