Howard the Duck will share a scene with T'Challa/Black Panther on Marvel's animated What If...? series.
Seth Green, who voices the anthropomorphic extraterrestrial fowl in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that he reprised the character for What If...?, “which is really cool because it resulted in a scene between T’Challa and Howard.” The show marks the late Chadwick Boseman's last time playing T'Challa following his tragic death from colon cancer in August 2020.
Inspired by the Marvel Comics anthology, What If...? explores alternate timelines in the MCU, including one where a young T'Challa, rather than Peter Quill, grows up to become Star-Lord after being taken from Earth by Yondu and the Ravagers. The series' trailers show Wakanda's royal son traveling the galaxy and stealing the orb containing the Power Stone from the planet Morag, like Peter did in the MCU's original timeline. He's also shown coming face to face with Howard, although it's unclear what brings the pair together.
Green first voiced Howard in 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, going uncredited for his work in the film's post-credits scene. He reprised his role for 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this time with Howard showing up in the movie proper. Green also voiced the character for the animated Guardians of the Galaxy series that aired on Disney XD for three seasons.
Created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik for Marvel Comics in 1973, Howard the Duck made the jump to the big screen with the live-action film of the same name released in 1986. The first-ever feature-length adaptation of Marvel's comic books, the movie bombed at the box office upon its release, with critics panning its flat attempts at humor and bizarre mix of tones. Lea Thompson, who starred in the '80s film, aspires to reboot the alien bird for the MCU, even pitching herself to direct his solo movie.
What If...? premieres Aug. 11 on Disney+, with additional episodes arriving weekly on Wednesdays. Once believed to act as a standalone series, it's now confirmed the show will connect to the chaos unfolding across the Marvel multiverse in the wake of Loki's game-changing Season 1 finale.
