Black Widow kicked off its domestic box office run with a bang thanks to its Thursday night preview screenings.
According to Variety, Black Widow made $13.2 million from Thursday preview showings. As noted by Gitesh Pandya on Twitter, that's the highest gross for these types of screenings in 2021, beating out the $7.1 million and $4.8 million gross of F9 and A Quiet Place Part II, respectively. Black Widow also aligned with Thursday night hauls of pre-pandemic superhero movies like Wonder Woman, Ant-Man and the Wasp and Doctor Strange while coming in only slightly behind the $14.5 million gross of Thor: Ragnarok.
The $13.2 million figure is especially impressive since Black Widow, unlike all prior Marvel Cinematic Universe installments, is simultaneously debuting as a premium-video-on-demand title. It remains to be seen how such a release strategy will affect Black Widow's long-term box office prospects. However, currently, it appears poised to dominate the coming weekend and dethrone F9 for the highest-grossing domestic opening of 2021.
Black Widow's box office success isn't just confined to North America. In its first two days of release in major foreign territories such as Russia, Australia and Japan, Black Widow amassed $22.4 million.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film is now playing in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
