Fairy Tail is home to some of shonen's strongest and most colorful action heroes, including the fire dragon slayer, Natsu Dragneel. He is known for his hot temper, gung-ho attitude, and never-give-up mentality, especially when his friends are backing him up. His dragon slayer magic allows him to harness the power of fire, and he can even eat flames to gain strength.
That's an impressive package, but Natsu's fire can't protect him from everything. If he fought a variety of Soul Reapers from the Bleach franchise, for example, some zanpakuto (soul-cutting swords) would have the perfect powers and abilities to take Natsu down. Others, though, are powerless before Natsu's flaming might.
10 COUNTERS NATSU: Extinguir Is Designed To Nullify Flame-Based Powers
One of the most peculiar Arrancar is a blond boy named Wonderweiss Margela, who has Espada-level spiritual pressure. He fights barehanded and with basic techniques such as bala and cero blasts, but he also has a zanpakuto, a large one called Extinguir.
Ex-Captain Sosuke Aizen modified Wonderweiss and his zanpakuto to counter Captain-General Yamamoto's flame-based zanpakuto, and it's conceivable that, in a crossover event, Aizen could do the same for Natsu's own fire magic.
9 NATSU CAN HANDLE: Momo's Tobiume Plays Right Into Natsu's Hands
Many kido-based zanpakuto have a unique element to them, and Lieutenant Momo Hinamori's shikai, Tobiume, is all about fire and explosions. Momo is naturally talented with kido, and this is reflected in her shikai, as seen when she fought the Arrancars in the fake Karakura Town.
Momo's abilities will do no good against Natsu Dragneel, however. In fact, Tobiume will fuel Natsu in battle, since he can simply suck up and devour the flames as they come. Momo wasn't counting on that.
8 COUNTERS NATSU: Suzumebachi Delivers Certain Death After Two Stings
Captain Soi Fon of squad 2 is a trained assassin, able to move faster than the eye can see and deliver deadly blows to the enemy. Soi Fon is too quick and agile for Natsu to keep up, and her shikai will help her finish the job. Its name is Suzumebachi, and it's terrifying.
Suzumebachi is shaped like a metal stinger on Soi Fon's right middle finger, and one sting to the enemy creates a butterfly-shaped mark. One more sting on such a mark kills the victim right away, and Natsu has no real defense against that.
7 NATSU CAN HANDLE: Haineko's Ash Can Be Blown Away
Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto serves in squad 10, and although she's a total party animal, she's no slacker in combat. Her kido skills are sharp, and her shikai, Haineko, dissolves her zanpakuto's blade into a small cloud of ultra-sharp ash.
This ash can move around the battlefield telekinetically and shred the opponent without mercy. However, Natsu's blasts of flame can blow the ash away with bursts of hot air, buying him time to strike Rangiku personally.
6 COUNTERS NATSU: Brujeria Can Take Total Control Of Natsu's Body
The 7th Espada, Zommari Rureaux, fancies himself a king because his released zanpakuto, Brujeria, allows him to take control of his enemies when he views them with his enchanted eyes. He can assume control of separate limbs or the entire body if he views the head.
Even quick targets such as Captain Byakuya Kuchiki are too slow to evade Zommari's eyes, and Natsu would be helpless once Zommari used this power on him. If Lucy watched, she'd be reminded of Kain Hikaru's voodoo doll, Mr. Cursey, with its similar powers.
5 NATSU CAN HANDLE: Zabimaru's Powers Are Too Straightforward To Stop Natsu
Renji Abarai's shikai, Zabimaru, is a melee shikai that would pose little threat to Natsu. Renji's shikai is too slow to hit the agile and crafty Natsu, and not even the bankai will give Renji the edge. At most, this bankai could shield Renji from Natsu's fire for a time.
When Zabimaru uses its true power, it launches flame attacks at the enemy, but if Natsu can eat Tobiume's flames, he can eat Zabimaru's, too. Even the enhanced version of Zabimaru will have this issue, giving Natsu a clear advantage.
4 COUNTERS NATSU: Tiburon Is The Ultimate Aquatic Zanpakuto
The 3rd Espada is an incredibly powerful female Arrancar named Tier Halibel, and her zanpakuto release turns her into a shark empress. Even when using her sealed zanpakuto, Halibel is absolutely deadly, and things only get worse for Natsu when her released mode, Tiburon, is used.
Halibel's zanpakuto release grants her bone armor and the ability to control vast amounts of water, and water is a classic counter to fire. It helps that Halibel has not only an elemental advantage but also immense supernatural strength and endurance to press this advantage even further. Natsu has no chance against Tiburon.
3 NATSU CAN HANDLE: Hozukimaru Is Strong But Simple
Ikkaku Madarame is a high-ranking Soul Reaper in squad 11, and he is a lot like Renji -- eager to prove himself, aggressive, and cleverer than he looks. He also has a rather straightforward melee-type zanpakuto, named Hozukimaru. Natsu has nothing to fear.
Ikkaku is a powerful fighter, to be sure, but Hozukimaru's shikai and bankai are not hard counters to Natsu's fighting style by any means. It's strength vs strength, and in a contest like that, Natsu stands a fair chance of winning.
2 COUNTERS NATSU: Sakanade Can Twist Natsu's Movements Into Knots
One of the eight Visoreds, Shinji Hirako, has a rather tricky kido-based zanpakuto, named Sakanade. Shinji doesn't often use that shikai, but when he does, the opponent is in for a rough time. Sakanade will scramble up the opponent's gross motor nerves and thus mix up their movements.
The opponent will have their senses inverted as well, and nearly any opponent will be rendered confused and helpless as their body moves in different ways than they mean it to. Once this shikai takes effect on Natsu, there's nothing he can do.
1 NATSU CAN HANDLE: Golondrina Makes Sharp Feathers That Natsu Can Blow Away
One of the three fallen Espadas is a playful young woman named Cirucci Sanderwicci, and her sealed zanpakuto has a disc-shaped blade at the end of a long tether. Its released form, Golondrina, turns Cirucci into a giant moth-like warrior with ultra-sharp feathers. Those feathers vibrate over one million times per second for added power.
Natsu had better not get sliced up with Golondrina's feathers, so he can use his explosive fire magic to blast them away, and clear a path to Cirucci herself. Cirucci can recall her feathers once she flings them at the enemy, but Natsu has a clear advantage here. Those feathers will never get close.
