HBO added another Game of Thrones spinoff series to its schedule.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the yet-unnamed series is set in The Golden Empire of Yi Ti, a land that was never seen in the original Game of Thrones series. Inspired by Imperial China, Yi Ti is a region in the south-eastern continent of Essos and home to one of the oldest and most advanced societies in the known world of creator George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series.
The streamer did not provide any further details on the Golden Empire series but, according to THR, it is reportedly one of three animated projects currently in the works at HBO, all inspired by the world of Game of Thrones.
While Yi Ti is not spoken of in HBO's Game of Thrones, the name appears briefly in Season 7 when Gilly, while in the Citadel of Old Town, reads a copy of The World of Ice & Fire with one visible page mentioning Yi Ti by name. However, famous navigator Lord Corlys "Sea Snake" Velaryon, portrayed by Steve Toussaint in the upcoming prequel series House of the Dragon, sailed to Yi Ti 200 years before the War of the Five Kings in Westeros.
House of the Dragon is currently the only main GoT spinoff series in the works, entering production in early 2021 and announcing the main cast. Based on Martin's Fire & Blood, a collection of stories and records detailing the history of House Targaryen, House of the Dragon is expected to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2022.
