Howard the Duck Star Wants to Reboot the Cult Classic '80s Film

Should Howard the Duck get more screen time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lea Thompson would love to help from the director's chair.

"I see #HowardTheDuck is trending #3," Thompson said on Twitter in response to the newly released Marvel's What If...? trailer featuring a brief Howard cameo. "That's awesome. #i love my duck #WhatIf I get to direct @Marvel reboot."

First introduced in 1973's Adventure into Fear #19, Howard The Duck is an anthropomorphic duck from the planet Duckworld who got kidnapped and dropped onto Earth, eventually going on to have numerous adventures with other Marvel characters. This setup was loosely adapted into the 1986 Howard The Duck movie produced by Lucasfilm, with Howard being mysteriously transported from Duckworld to Cleveland, where he meets singer Beverly Switzler (played by Thompson) and tries to find a way back home. The first non-serial Marvel film adaptation, it was universally panned upon release and a box office failure, causing George Lucas to sell Howard The Duck's animation team The Graphics Group to Steve Jobs, who renamed it Pixar.

Howard canonically entered the MCU in Guardians of the Galaxy as a part of the Collector's gallery, later being voiced by Seth Green during its post-credit scene. Green would later reprise his role as Howard in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the Marvel animated series Guardians of the Galaxy and Ultimate Spider-Man. A Howard The Duck animated series was also pitched to Hulu, but it was canceled in early 2020, alongside the Tigra and Dazzler show. Most recently, Hulu released a ten-episode first season of Marvel's M.O.D.O.K. animated by Green's Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, best known for their work on Robot Chicken.

Marvel's What If...? explores what would happen if various multiverse storylines from the MCU films had played out differently. The show's recent trailer teased a number of these stories, such as Killmonger saving Tony Stark from the missile that pierced his heart in Afghanistan or T'Challa becoming a Ravager instead of Peter Quill. However, despite a number of MCU actors reprising their roles from the films, Green will be recast as Howard on What If...?.
