Victoria Alonso, a producer and the executive vice president of film production at Marvel Studios, opened up about how she feels regarding Black Widow's treatment in Iron Man 2.
"It bothered me then and it bothers me now," Alonso said to Time. "I remember thinking, 'She's not a thing.' But how apropos: the world sees a sexy woman and thinks that because she is beautiful, that’s all she has to give." The Iron Man 2 scene Alonso is referencing involves Tony Stark googling scantily clad images of Natasha Romanoff and remarking about her, "I want one."
These aren't the only comments from Alonso regarding the film industry's longstanding gender-based issues. Alonso also remarked about struggles against the "myth that women's stories don't sell [and] that super-heroes can't be women," while stating, "we had to demystify a bunch of these myths that were very much a part of what Hollywood was all about."
Scarlett Johansson debuted as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in a supporting role in Iron Man 2. She reprised the character in seven subsequent Marvel Studios productions, including headlining her own upcoming solo movie.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
