John Wick Spinoff Series The Continental's Budget Has Been Upgraded

The cost of Starz's upcoming John Wick spinoff The Continental has been revealed and it is massive.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, each episode of The Continental will have "budgets upwards of $20 million," with the full series reaching nearly $60 million overall. This exceeds the cost of the first two John Wick films, made on $20-30 million and $40 million respectively, with only John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum surpassing it on a $75 million budget.

It was revealed in April that The Continental will take place in the 1970s and delve into the origins of both New York Continental owner Winston, portrayed in the franchise by Ian McShane, and the assassin hotel itself. The hotel, introduced in 2014's John Wick, serves as a neutral ground for Wick and other hitmen to recuperate and purchase weapons for missions. Those who break the rules and conduct business on the hotel grounds suffer extreme consequences. One of The Book of Eli directors, Albert Hughes, will not only executive produce the series with David Leitch, but also direct two of its three episodes. It is currently unknown who will play young Winston in The Continental or when the series will be released.

McShane will reprise his role as Winston in the franchise's latest sequel, John Wick: Chapter 4Chapter 3 – Parabellum ended with Winston double-crossing Wick in order to retain his position as Continental owner with the High Table Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon), only for Wick to survive and join Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King in declaring war on the High Table's members. Fishburne will also return for Chapter 4 alongside Lance Reddick as the Continental's enigmatic concierge Charon, and longtime franchise director Chad Stahelski.

A number of major actors and action stars have since been added to Chapter 4's supporting cast, including Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Atkins and Marko Zaror. The film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 27, 2022.
