Margot Robbie Doesn't Know When She'll Play Harley Quinn Again

Harley Quinn's role in The Suicide Squad next month might be the last time Margot Robbie plays the character for a while.

While Jame Gunn's take on Suicide Squad was delayed due to the pandemic, Robbie had a full schedule filming it after Birds of Prey. As such, the actor is ready to have a breather when it comes to playing the chaotic character. "It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds... and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she's exhausting," Robbie told EW. "I don't know when we're next going to see her. I'm just as intrigued as everyone else is."

Before Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad materialized, numerous other Harley Quinn projects were in the works. A Harley/Joker romance film was being developed, along with a standalone Harley film (which likely became Birds of Prey). There were also plans for Gotham City Sirens, which would've seen Harley join up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman. A Birds of Prey follow-up is also still a possibility, though nothing definitive has been confirmed.

Of course, Harley's future in at least one version of the DCEU is set. The post-credits scene in Zack Snyder's Justice League revealed Harley died in Batman's arms. Robbie, however, was unaware of this when the interviewer brought it up. "Whaaat?" said Robbie. "I didn't know that. [Laughs] Thank you for telling me!"

Though shocked, Robbie went on to discuss her thoughts on Harley's ultimate fate in Snyder's universe. "I guess it's kind of like the comics," Robbie said. "The film version of the DC universe, I actually think they're a lot like the comics. You pick up one comic and something's happening and then you pick up the next comic and maybe that character's not alive, maybe that character's not with that person, maybe that character looks completely different. Each movie is its own sort of thing, and I think that works in the comic book world, and I think that works in the DC film world as well... So, yeah, I didn't know that, but it doesn't necessarily change what other people are able to do with this universe, I don't think."
