Margot Robbie Had No Clue Zack Snyder Killed Harley Quinn | CBR

Margot Robbie, who plays Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe, had no idea her character died in Zack Snyder's Justice League.

Harley's fate is revealed during the film's epilogue, AKA the Knightmare sequence, in which Batman details how Harley died in his arms. Robbie, having not seen this scene ahead of time, was shocked to learn this during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "I didn't know that," she admitted, laughing. "Thank you for telling me!"

Robbie made her debut as the DCEU's Harley Quinn in 2016's Suicide Squad, prior to headlining the 2020 spinoff film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). She will reprise the role yet again for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, a followup that is neither a traditional sequel nor full-blown reboot of the previous movie. Commenting on this, Robbie pointed out Harley's fate in Snyder's Justice League cut doesn't necessarily dictate her future in the franchise.

"I guess it's kind of like the comics," said Robbie. "The film version of the DC universe, I actually think they're a lot like the comics. You pick up one comic and something's happening and then you pick up the next comic and maybe that character's not alive, maybe that character's not with that person, maybe that character looks completely different. Each movie is its own sort of thing, and I think that works in the comic book world, and I think that works in the DC film world as well. It's not like Marvel where everything is more obviously linked in a more linear way. It feels like there's so many adjacent stories, worlds, and films happening at the same time, just like there are in the comics."

She went on to note that one director's vision for the DCEU "doesn't necessarily change what other people are able to do with this universe, I don't think." Instead, Robbie reasoned DCEU movie directors have more freedom to come in and put their own spin on the universe, much like Gunn did with The Suicide Squad. "He didn't have to be beholden to the version that David Ayer (director of Suicide Squad) set up. He could pick it up and make it his own, which I'm sure was more appealing for him," she added.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid. The film arrives in theaters and on HBO Max Aug. 6.
