Deadpool is officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- or so says Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds recently reprised the Merc With a Mouth opposite Taika Waititi as the MCU's Korg in a video to promote his and Waititi's sci-fi adventure Free Guy. The actor confirmed this means Deadpool is also part of the MCU in the text accompanying the promo on his Instagram account, writing, "He’s starting with reaction videos, then some social influencer work, onto Parks appearances all leading up to some after-credit work by 2030."
Disney and Marvel Studios landed the film rights to Deadpool and other X-Men characters following the Mouse House's acquisition of Fox's movie and TV assets in 2019. While Marvel Studios President and Marvel Chief Creative Officer Kevin Feige has yet to announce when Wolverine and other mutants will formally join the MCU, he revealed that Deadpool 3 is actively moving forward in early 2021. Moreover, like Fox's Deadpool solo films, the sequel will be R-rated, which is a first for the MCU's movies.
For now, however, it's unclear how Deadpool 3 will continue the story in 2018's Deadpool 2. Fox originally planned to follow that film with an X-Force spinoff prior to releasing another solo adventure centered on Wade Wilson, with Josh Brolin and Zazie Beetz presumably reprising their Deadpool 2 roles as Cable and Domino. Following the Disney/Fox purchase, Reynolds claimed the early version of Deadpool 3 was a road trip movie featuring Deadpool and Wolverine.
Marvel Studios currently has a full movie slate on through to the first half of 2023. Its lineup includes sequels featuring Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Ant-Man and the Wasp and the Guardians of the Galaxy, in addition to solo movies for MCU newcomers Shang-Chi and the Eternals. The studio has further announced Fantastic Four and Blade reboots for the MCU to arrive some time after that, along with Deadpool 3.
Deadpool 3 is being scripted by Bob's Burgers writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin but has yet to officially secure a director. As for Reynolds, he will return to the big screen when Free Guy opens exclusively in theaters on Aug. 13. The actor will also star opposite Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot in the Netflix action/comedy Red Notice this fall.
