A photo taken on the London set of Netflix's The Sandman may reveal the first look at Kirby Howell-Baptiste as her character Death of the Endless, older sister of Dream.
Posted on Twitter by a local who came across the set and then shared on Reddit, the image appears to feature Howell-Baptiste in an all-black costume typical of Death's outfits in the source comics by Neil Gaiman. Lead actor Tom Sturridge is also visible, in costume as Dream. The Twitter user, @stef_daydreamer, added the remark "When you stumbled upon a Netflix series being filmed in Richmond..." and followed it with a second tweet confirming, "Ok, they are filming The Sandman."
Because of the characters present for the shot and the park setting, it seems most likely that the scene being filmed is from the issue of the comics titled "The Sound of Her Wings." Appropriately for the first glimpse that fans are getting of Death, this is her first appearance in the story. In the issue, Dream is brooding on his own after completing a vital quest, and Death finds him and offers some perspective to her little brother.
The casting of Howell-Baptiste as Death drew some complaints from fans expecting her to have the unnaturally pale complexion of her comics counterpart, although Gaiman made it clear that he was fully behind the choice of actor and unconcerned with negative reactions. The image from the set seems to show that accuracy to the comics is still a priority for the production, with Death's hair and outfit immediately evoking her classic appearance.
Executive produced and co-written by Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer, Netflix's The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Charles Dance as Roderick Burgess, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Asim Chaudhry as Cain and Abel, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Donna Preston as Despair, Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Niamh Walsh as Young Ethel Cripps, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps, David Thewlis as John Dee, Kyo Ra as Rose Walker, Stephen Fry as Gilbert, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, Sandra James Young as Unity Kincaid and Patton Oswalt as Matthew the Raven.
