Star Wars: The Funniest Names in the Galaxy | CBR

Star Wars isn’t really the best property to mine for baby names. Although some names like Luke and Leia are fairly common, others names like Han, Mace, Mon or Bail -- and that’s keeping it to one syllable -- have become iconic to the franchise, but they would be kind of an unusual choice for a name on Earth.

But those are far from the craziest names from a galaxy far, far away, and some of them can be quite humorous. Here are some of the funniest names in all of the Star Wars franchise.

Biggs was Luke’s friend in A New Hope, and Luke looked up to him for making something of himself and joining the Rebellion as a pilot. So, what it sounds like is that he was a “Biggs” influence in Luke’s life as he brought light into a dark galaxy. Clever.

Jet was another Rebel pilot in A New Hope. During the Battle of Yavin, everyone was using each other’s call signs, but George Lucas must have loved Porkins' name so much that the other pilots were calling him by name over their ships’ com devices.

Mart is the final pilot on the list. He appeared in the Star Wars Rebels series as a young member of the Iron Squadron on Mykapo. Mart’s name is a simple rearrangement of Matt Martin, a member of the Star Wars Story Group. We see what you did there, Matt.

This one isn’t an individual name; it’s the name of a species. The Mon Calamari were the big-eyed fish beings that were crucial to the Rebellion in the Original Trilogy. Admiral Ackbar might have been a great leader, but unfortunately, his species literally means "squid."

There’s nothing like indirect, authorial characterization to tell you a guy cares about money. Greedo was a Rodian bounty hunter that didn’t make it much past the opening minutes of A New Hope. He was the one that Han Solo shot first -- or didn’t. Either way, his name tells you need to know everything about him.

It turns out that Tusken Raiders have individual names too. Of course, we can’t really differentiate them, though. This was the guy that tried to brain Luke in A New Hope, but it seems like somebody was just clearing their throat when they decided on his name.

Lobot was Lando Calrissian's aide and Cloud City's computer liaison officer in The Empire Strike’s Back. He is easily identified by the computer cybernetics attached to the back of his head. Maybe that’s how he was named because his name sure seems like it means “like a robot.”

Droopy McCool was the stage name of Snit who was the lead horn player in the Max Rebo Band at Jabba’s Palace. Maybe it’s different on Tatooine, but being called Droopy kind of seems like more of an insult than a successful stage name.

The Prequel Trilogy has its fair share of odd names too. These two members of the Neimoidian Trade Federation are characterized as greedy and slimy. Oh, and their names are not so subtle references to American politicians Newt Gingrich and Trent Lott.

Shu Mai was the president of the Commerce Guild when the organization joined Count Dooku’s Separatist Movement, and she was the only one in the Separatist Council to share her slight misgivings with Dooku’s movement. Mai happens to share a name with a type of traditional Chinese dumpling – a Shumai.

Elan was the Death Sticks Guy in Attack of the Clones who Obi-Wan convinced to “go home and rethink” his life. His name kind of speaks for itself. Way for the writers to lay it all out there when describing someone who clearly spends most of his time in a sleazy club pushing illegal drugs.

Clearly someone put a lot of thought into this one too. Savage Opress was the Nightbrother turned want-to-be Sith and Darth Maul’s brother. He was strong and brutal, so he got a fitting name. Now everyone will know that he’s savage and oppressive but not very original.

Someone definitely closed their eyes and randomly pressed keys to come up with this guy’s name. So, don’t try and type it out. Copy and paste is only the way to go, and don’t even think about trying to pronounce it. Pao was a member of the Rogue One Squadron that helped steal the Death Star plans from Scarif. However, if nothing else, he gets the prize for the longest name in Star Wars.

Therm was a male Nephran who lived during the time of the Empire and appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He loved to play cards on the planet Vador, but he was a particularly poor loser. So, he relied on his fearsome appearance and his, apparently, self-given nickname of Scissorpunch. Way to pass the buck on that one, Lucasfilm; claim that the character came up with it all by himself.

Toht Ra was a security officer on Dryden Vos’ ship in Solo: A Star Wars Story. He confiscated weapons from guests as they entered the private yacht. His name is also a reference to another Lucasfilm project. Gestapo Agent Arnold Toht was looking for the Staff of Ra in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Ello Asty was a Resistance fighter who died attacking Starkiller Base, and Slowen Lo was a driftwood salesman on Canto Bight. Both names, however, are references to Beastie Boys songs “Hello Nasty” and “Slow and Low.” Ello’s helmet says “Born to Ill,” also referencing the band's album, Licensed to Ill.

Loatha Sommover only appeared in a deleted scene from The Last Jedi. She was an alien slug thing that rode on a hover platform like Jabba the Hutt. Apparently, whoever decided her name thought that the character was “loathsome all over.”

Don’t think that funny names don’t apply to Jedi too. Sha’a Gi appeared in Genndy Tartakovsky’s Star Wars: Clone Wars television show. From his look and green lightsaber to his fear, Sha’a Gi is an obvious nod to Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. Zoinks.

Zett was the brave Padawan in Revenge of the Sith that allowed Bail Organa to escape from the Jedi Temple. He was played by George Lucas’ son Jett Lucas, and the young Jedi’s name is clearly a slightly altered version of his actor’s name.

Ima-Gun Di was a male Kajain'sa'Nikto and a Jedi General during the early days of the Clone Wars. He sacrificed himself on the plant of Ryloth to allow the Republic to supply the planet’s people with critical supplies. Although he died a hero, he never had a chance. Look closer because Master Di’s name is a complete troll. It literally says “I’m gonna die.” That one was a little cold.
