The recently inked deal between the creators of South Park and ViacomCBS Inc. will include at least one video game.
According to Bloomberg, South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone will use the $900 million investment from ViacomCBS Inc. to fund several significant projects. These include 14 animated films, exclusive to streaming service Paramount+, several more seasons of the TV show, a documentary series, a marijuana company and a "3D video game that is set in the world of South Park."
Given how recent the deal is, barely anything is known about this upcoming video game project. The last two South Park games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole were released in 2014 and 2017 respectively. While both titles were published by Ubisoft, The Stick of Truth was developed by Obsidian Entertainment while Ubisoft San Franciso handled The Fractured But Whole. A mobile game, South Park: Phone Destroyer also launched in 2017.
South Park: The Stick of Truth is a turn-based RPG, borrowing elements from popular franchises such as Final Fantasy and Super Mario RPG. The game revolves around the titular Stick of Truth as the children of South Park engage in an elaborate live-action role-playing game to obtain the mystical item and seize control of the town. The game is beloved by fans for its authentic recreation of the TV show, including a variety of Easter eggs and nods to iconic episodes.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole adopted a superhero aesthetic and iterated on the gameplay of the preceding title. The game was praised for expanding on the original's basic combat system and introducing a variety of new mechanics while still retaining the heart of its source material.
While both of the recent South Park role-playing games are critically acclaimed, the franchise's older adaptions did not prove as successful. The original South Park game, released for the PlayStation 1 in 1999, is known for its awkward adaption of the TV series. Featuring awkward 3D models of the South Park cast and rudimentary first-person shooter gameplay, the game was poorly received by critics.
While little is currently known about this new South Park game, fans can find both The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole on a variety of consoles, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
