The will-they won't-they fan-favorite relationship of Jake Peralta and Amy Santiago is teased and explored throughout the entirety of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, with varying degrees of pacing. They are two vastly different people with different personalities and interests, but their chemistry is undeniable all the same, and they are both exceptional detectives.
It isn't always as straightforward as the two of them liking each other and getting together, but they do eventually get there, thanks in part to Jake's persistence. There are several occasions before and after they eventually get together where Jake proves or expresses how he feels about Amy.
10 Jake Let Amy Win The Jimmy Jab Games
Back when Jake is discovering and trying to suppress his feelings for Amy, while she's with Teddy, the squad holds a funny competition event when Captain Holt and Terry are away from the precinct, the Jimmy Jab Games.
Jake says he wants the number of Rosa's friend if he wins, but she consistently refuses, saying that Jake seems more interested in flirting with Amy. Jake ultimately lets Amy win the Jimmy Jab games, losing the bet and admitting to Rosa that she was right. It was at this point that more and more members of the Nine-Nine were being let in on Jake's crush, which would eventually progress further.
9 Jake Agreed To Handle All Of The Wedding Prep So Amy Could Work An Important Case
In the lead-up to Jake and Amy's wedding, with a large amount of preparation still to be done, Amy and Rosa are suddenly caught up in a case, when one of their previous criminals resurfaces.
Jake jumps at the chance to prove himself to Amy as being responsible and agrees to sort all of the preparations. Naturally, he lures 'the perfect husband' Terry into helping him, but Jake does eventually become immersed in the role of wedding planner. When they are faced with a mini-crisis, with their hard work in the form of gift packages being locked in Terry's minivan, Jake smashes the window exclaiming 'I love Amy Santiago!' His actions are questionable but it's proof of his love for Amy.
8 Jake Educated Himself To Help Understand A Difficult Topic
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is always acknowledged for its witty humor and great delivery, but one aspect of the show that is often overlooked is how well it deals with real social issues. One such instance is the focal point of a case where Jake and Amy work together, involving alleged sexual assault.
Jake is horrified when he realizes what many women have had to go through in their lives, having been oblivious and ignorant to it all these years. As he loves Amy and wants to understand more, he is not only supportive to his wife, but he actively watches a documentary on the subject that past Jake wouldn't have gone near.
7 Amy Going Undercover In A Prison Was Too Much For Jake
When Amy goes undercover in prison to get close to Jimmy Figgis' sister, Maura, in order to get information regarding the potential moles in the FBI, she is required to frequently check in with a couple of doctors for regular updates, with the doctors being Jake and Charles.
Through sheer fear that something may happen to the love of his life, Jake becomes overprotective, calling Amy in for even the slightest of interactions. He eventually excuses himself from the case due to being too close, and despite it frustrating Amy that he wouldn't let her do her job, she appreciates the sentiment.
6 Jake Was There To Reassure Amy When She Freaked Out About The Sergeant's Exam
In "Chasing Amy," Amy freaks out about the prospect of everything changing between her and Jake if she does indeed pass the Sergeant's exam. Jake manages to showcase his exceptional detective skills and tracks her down to the rooftop where they went for their bet-date back in the first season.
He manages to calm her down, reassuring her that things will be fine and that she needs to go and take the exam. When they discover they are locked up there, Jake even swings off the side of the building for Amy. It was a rocky way to get there, but Jake's actions came from the best of intentions, showing he'll do anything for her.
5 Jake Was Willing To Risk His Career For Amy
The Vulture was one of the squad's main nemeses over the course of the Brooklyn Nine-Nine series. He would garner this nickname by constantly storming in last minute to steal the squad's cases, taking all of the credit. Matters would only become even worse when he became the new Captain.
When the Vulture gets hungry with power, he gives Jake and Amy an ultimatum, saying that they either have to break up or quit. When their efforts to foil the Vulture are thwarted, Jake refuses to break up with Amy and is therefore ready to get demoted, before Holt saves the day.
4 Jake Agreeing To Change His Mattress For Amy Was A Big Deal
When Jake and Amy are still in the early stages of their relationship, they encounter one of their first proper arguments and stumbling blocks, when they disagree about Jake's mattress and whether he should get a new one or not.
Jake makes no attempt to hide the fact that he hates change, so the thought of having to spend a lot of money on a new mattress when he already has one, is alien to him. Ultimately, it is another case of Jake realizing that his stubbornness over something so trivial makes no sense compared to how he feels about Amy.
3 Jake Forfeited A Bet & Gave Up His Apartment For Amy
Jake and Amy competing against each other in some capacity started at the very beginning of the show and it keeps going, even when they are together in the later series. On one occasion when a bunch of inmates escapes and the squad has to hurry out and bring them all in, Jake and Amy use this opportunity to compete once again.
They agree that whoever makes the most arrests, will get to keep their apartment and the other one will have to move in. Jake is stubborn throughout most of the episode despite his apartment being much worse than Amy's, but he concedes while they are competing for the final arrest, as he loves her enough to give up his old place and embrace the change.
2 Jake Abandoned Hopes Of Winning The Halloween Heist In Order To Propose To Amy
Jake and Captain Holt's initial idea to have a fun bet involving a Halloween heist, soon turned into an annual event for the Nine-Nine, with one appearing every season. It was a fun way to have a revisited running storyline regarding the overall winners of the heist while not overdoing it.
In the fifth edition in "HalloVeen," Jake uses the heist as a cover to find a creative way to propose to Amy, after she teases him about being boring and predictable. Jake's proposal plan effectively derailing the real heist, meaning that there was no actual winner, is a declaration of Jake's love for Amy in itself, as he forfeited his chance to win the actual competition.
1 Jake Changed His View On Having Kids For Amy
When debating whether or not to have kids, Jake and Amy, in true Brooklyn Nine-Nine fashion, had an actual debate about it when working a case together at a hospital. While the debate itself was funny, made even more so by the inclusion of Captain Holt, Kevin, and some other debate moderators, the subject matter itself brought up some deep feelings from both sides, especially Jake.
Initially against the thought of having kids due to his traumatic childhood, Jake eventually realizes that together with Amy, they can work through anything, so he concedes and agrees to have a baby with Amy.
