Destiny 2: What We Know About The Witch Queen, Lightfall and The Final Shape

During Bungie's Gamescom showcase, Destiny players were treated to a roadmap for the future of the franchise during Bungie's Gamescom Showcase. Not only did players get their first look at Savathûn and Season of the Lost, but they also learned a little more about where Destiny's future lies. Bungie name-dropped the expansion set to follow Lightfall, which will follow the upcoming The Witch Queen. The Final Shape expansion will herald the finale of the Light vs Darkness saga and lead into a new age of Destiny.

While a new age for the MMO-infused first-person shooter sounds exciting, players have three expansions ahead of them first. We now know a bit about The Witch Queen's story after its Gamescom Showcase, but details are still scant about the other two. That said, based on what we know about Destiny 2's current narrative flow, and based on the titles of these upcoming expansions, we can make some assumptions about the finer details.

The Witch Queen is Destiny 2's seventh expansion and the next slated to launch for the game. Bungie revealed that Guardians would have to contend with Savathûn after she's obtained the power of the Light. Savathûn uses this profound new strength to resurrect and imbue her Hive brood with the Traveler's radiance, turning them into Hive Guardians. It's the first time Guardians will have to contend with other users of Light, and just after they'd begun mastering Darkness. The battle will take players all the way to a new location, Savathûn's Throne World, a powerful pocket dimension where the Witch Queen is in complete control. Players will need to find new strength if they're to survive Savathûn's cunning. The Witch Queen is set to release on Feb. 2, 2022.

After The Witch Queen's year-long expansion, players' next challenge awaits in Lightfall. Initially set to conclude Destiny 2's story, there aren't a ton of details available about what players will go up against in Lightfall. However, given the expansion's title, it'll likely build to the fall of the Traveler. Whether this is because the forces of Darkness are finally able to overcome The Last City's defenses or (as has been subtly hinted) because the Traveler isn't what we thought, it's sure to flip player expectation on its head. There isn't a release date available yet for Lightfall, but considering The Witch Queen's delay, players can likely expect a release sometime during 2023.

Originally conceived as the end to the Light vs Darkness saga, Bungie recognized the need for an additional chapter to follow Lightfall and provide a conclusive end to the building narrative. During The Witch Queen's Showcase, Bungie revealed The Final Shape for the first time, only enticing players by saying the expansion will serve as the definitive end to Destiny's current narrative arcs. Outside a name, there's no other information available about what players should expect, but it's not too much of a leap to infer "the final shape" could be referring to the final shape of the conflict between the Light and Darkness. It could also, of course, reference a now-unknown element of Destiny's story or even that square-shaped entities will now be joining the giant circle and triangles people have been worshipping in Destiny's lore.

Bungie went on to say that Destiny 2's current story will end with The Final Shape but that the series would go on. It's too far out to make any informed predictions, but Bungie hinted that the game would go through some kind of transformation following The Final Shape. While this remains a mystery, the future is looking bright for Destiny and all its upcoming content.
