The first full trailer for Amazon Studios' Cinderella, starring singer Camila Cabello, highlights the updated fairy tale, its musical take on popular songs, and Billy Porter's extravagant character.
Last month, the first teaser for Cinderella arrived, showcasing the modern interpretation of the classic story. The full trailer, however, offers a deeper look at the plot, which sees Cinderella, or Ella, as an aspiring dressmaker forced to work for her evil stepmother. Enter Porter's gold-covered fairy Godmother, who attempts to make Ella's dreams come true. But while she's able to turn heads at the ball, she wants more than a life of royal parties.
Though Ella naturally catches the eye of the prince, she isn't keen to simply be a princess. Instead, she wants to pursue her dreams, which looks to be the main way the film will differentiate itself from previous takes on the tale. That and the fact that pop songs like Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation" are reinterpreted for the musical film.
Amazon Studios landed the streaming rights to the live-action Cinderella remake from Sony in May of this year. Sony initially planned to release the film theatrically in early 2021 but pushed the release to July due to the pandemic. Now, it will arrive this September on Prime Video.
While the story was popularly adapted into a Disney animated film, this won't be one of the many live-action Disney remakes that have continued to emerge over the years. These include the upcoming live-action take on The Little Mermaid starring Halle Bailey. Interestingly, however, the new Cinderella will involve the lead as a struggling fashion designer, though certainly a less chaotic one than Emma Stone's character in Cruella.
Cinderella is a musically-driven bold new take on the traditional story you grew up with. Our heroine (Cabello) is an ambitious young woman whose dreams are bigger than the world will allow, but with the help of her Fab G (Billy Porter), she is able to persevere and make her dreams come true.
Directed by Kay Cannon, Cinderella stars Camila Cabello as Ella/Cinderella and Billy Porter as Cinderella's fairy godparent, Fab G. The movie releases Sept. 3 on Amazon Prime Video.
