How Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Sets Up a Sequel | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, now available on Netflix.

Netflix's The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf focuses on Vesemir, Geralt of Rivia's mentor, and someone who has to change his greedy ways to ensure his fraternity has a future. This movie ends with him battling Tetra, a mage who wants all witchers dead, and triumphing despite the fall of their keep at Kaer Morhen.

Interestingly, while there's no information about a possible sequel, there are several threads in Nightmare of the Wolf that lay the groundwork for a followup. Let's break them down.

The film ends with Vesemir finding the remaining younglings that fled the keep. One of them is Geralt, and he offers them the wolf medallions so they can decide if they want to be part of his new order. He's ashamed the old one got corrupted, with Reidrich and Deglan making hybrid monsters for them to hunt and keep earning income, so a sequel can focus on Vesemir training these new boys the right way.

Fans have always wanted to see more of young Geralt after he was offered up by his family. This can explain why he still had light in him as opposed to the other mutants that fell into hatred. In addition, we would get epic tension as these younglings may not see eye to eye with their teacher and each other. It would also act as great fodder to inform Geralt's journey in The Witcher Season 2 as he takes Ciri to the new base to hone her powers.

The new order can start training and taking out monsters across the Kaedwen realm to atone for what their seniors did. Tetra's king, though, might be inclined to send more armies after them as he hated how witchers pulled the wool over their eyes. He beheaded Luka in revenge too, and once he hears how Tetra died and Illyana absconded to the witchers, it's easy to see imagine him becoming even more bitter and craving vengeance.

He can hire other bitter mages like Tetra, who lost her mom due to a corrupt witcher framing her for a magical crime. These sorcerers used to engineer hybrid monsters too, so they could create new controllable creatures, melding science and magic to hunt Vesemir's team down. This presents an opportunity as well for Vesemir's crew to find new scientists to make more mutagen so the witchers are actually able to fight back and not go extinct.

Fil's the elf we saw in Season 1 who was sad the elven world suffered as centuries rolled on. He only appeared in one episode, but a sequel here could do him justice. He tried to get Vesemir to help him find missing girls, only to discover they were the subjects the witchers were experimenting on. But his adventure can continue as he rescued one elven guinea pig -- the daughter of the powerful illusionist, Kitsu.

Kitsu's alive too, but seeing as she attacked the witchers when Tetra lied about them killing her daughter, she can now seek out Fil and the girl. The youngling might be even more powerful than her mom, so the story can deal with Fil training and working with them. Chances are humans will be hunting the duo, as well as other rogue witchers, so this would inform how Fil remained a hero in the franchise.

He can even explore how other elvish tribes became endangered and reconnect with Vesemir's team. It would foreshadow Fil and Geralt's bond down the line. If Vesemir helps protect them, it would also bring his redemption full-circle.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is now available on Netflix, with The Witcher Season 2 arriving on Dec. 17.
