Lucasfilm and Disney+ pulled out all the stops to keep Luke Skywalker's cameo in Season 2 of The Mandalorian a secret. That includes using a fake script and concept art to suggest the Jedi who'd save the day was actually going to be Plo Koon.
The newest episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian shows off a section of the fake script, which breaks down how Plo Koon enters the bridge and lowers his hood after defeating the Dark Troopers. The concept art shows the Jedi Master with lightsaber in hand as he uses the Force to shove away the dismembered top half of one of the mechanical adversaries.
Plo Koon was a Kel Dor Jedi Master who debuted in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as a member of the Jedi Council. He'd go on to appear in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, the latter of which saw him gunned down on Cato Neimodia as part of Order 66.
While Plo Koon's potential involvement may come as a surprise to fans, it was equally surprising for the cast and crew of The Mandalorian, who weren't told until very late in the game that it was actually Luke who'd be showing up to save Grogu. "That's who we thought that it was at the end of [The Mandalorian Season 2 finale]. That's who we thought it was, was Plo Koon," Bo-Katan Kryze actor Katee Sackhoff said in April. "That's who we were told it was, and I'm a very gullible person. When somebody tries to tell me something, I say 'Okay.'"
The Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," Din Djarin, Cara Dune, Bo-Katan Kryze, Koska Reeves and Fennec Shand board Moff Gideon's ship to rescue Grogu. When it seems they'll soon become victims to the dark troopers, though, a lone X-Wing arrives and a cloaked Jedi wielding a familiar green lightsaber makes short work of the droid soldiers. This Jedi, of course, is Luke Skywalker, played by a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill.
"Talk about unexpected," Hamill said in July. "I had finished playing that part, I never expected to do it again. I thought if they ever told stories of Luke in that period, post the originals and pre-sequels, they'd get an actor, you know, an age-appropriate actor. So when John Favreau and Dave Filoni told me about what they wanted to do I was just stunned."
