INTERVIEW: Tim Hedrick Reflects on Avatar's Future | CBR

For decades, Tim Hedrick has been a major force behind numerous animated shows, including the currently running Fast & Furious: Spy Racers and Voltron: Legendary Defender. Before that though, Hedrick was one of the main writers on Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra. The franchise was an immediate critical hit when it debuted in 2005 and has gained a major resurgence in recent years.

During an exclusive interview with CBR ahead of the fifth season of Fast & Furious: Spy Racers (of which Hedrick serves as Showrunner and Executive Producer), Tim Hedrick reflected on how exciting it is to see the Avatar franchise gain a new level of appreciation in the modern era of streaming and teased the hit franchise's promising future.

Hedrick was a Staff Writer on Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra, helping construct some of the franchise's most iconic moments. With new audiences growing to love the series -- especially after it was added to Netflix, Hedrick reflected on the renewed appreciation for the show. "It's very exciting," Hedrick explained. "And I've continued to be involved with [Series Creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko], helping oversee some comics. Nothing totally hands-on, but just overseeing this and that.

"It's so great to see, first of all, [DiMartino and Konietzko] get their due for creating this awesome world that people love. And it's amazing that I have friends who send me art that their little kids do because they're watching it now... Avatar fan art is really tip-top. Those guys aren't messing around. They've had a lot of times to hone their craft... There's a lot of great bootleg Avatar stuff out there." For Hedrick, it was especially impressive that Avatar and Korra have an intergenerational audience. "The parents are watching it with [their kids] and it's like, the age range of fans for Avatar now, it's just unbelievable. To have people reaching out who I haven't heard from for a decade or whatever, and be like, 'My kids love Avatar. Do you have any and stuff that you can send them?!'"

"It's really cool that that has come back at the same time that we're doing Fast & furious: Spy Racers," Hedrick added, noting his excitement for the future of the franchise -- which includes the creation of Avatar Studios at Nickelodeon and the live-action adaptation coming from Netflix, "It's like Avatar and Korra are on Netflix at the same time," he said. "That's great. I'm really excited for those guys." Hedrick even what's next for the hit animated franchise. "[They] have big plans," he concluded. "I'm excited to see what they come up with next."
