Will Clerks III be in black-and-white like the original movie or color like 2006's Clerks II? According to Kevin Smith, the answer is... yes.
The actor/filmmaker discussed Clerks III during an episode of FatMan Beyond. "It's both [black-and-white and color]. The premise of the movie, of course, is that they make a movie, so the movie they make is in black-and-white," Smith said. "The movie's in color, but [it's black-and-white] when they shoot their version of Clerks -- which is called Inconvenience. That was the original title for Clerks... The black and white movie they're making is called Inconvenience, that's their version of Clerks."
Smith wrote, directed and starred in 1994's Clerks, a comedy that centers on Dante (Brian O'Halloran), a New Jersey convenience store clerk who works next door to the video rental store where his friend Randal (Jeff Anderson) is employed. Due to the movie's micro-budget ($27.5K for production, $230K for post-production), Smith shot Clerks in black-and-white at the Quick Stop where he worked. The film earned positive reviews upon its release, launching what became known as Smith's View Askewniverse.
Clerks III, the eighth live-action film in the View Askewniverse, sees Randal suffering a massive heart attack before reuniting with Dante, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) to make Inconvenience, a film about his life as a convenience store clerk. Also back is Rosario Dawson as Becky, a character who debuted in Clerks II. "There's a lot of us replicating the scenes that you know insanely well from Clerks, and the beautiful thing is they're replicated with all the same people, and we're all so f**king old," Smith said.
Production began on Clerks III in New Jersey on Aug. 2, just a couple of weeks after Lionsgate acquired the rights to the movie. The announcement include a statement from Smith in which he described the film as "an ode to both the enduring allure of cinema and the resourcefulness and lunacy of its storytellers. Years ago, Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker – so now it’s time I return the favor.”
Clerks III doesn't have a release date yet but looks to make it way to theaters in 2022.
