WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Loki, "For All Time. Always.," streaming now on Disney+.
The voice of What If...?'s Watcher invites you to take a journey into the multiverse post-Loki.
Entertainment Tonight released a video hyping up the show's endless possibilities, with Jeffrey Wright narrating how such realities are able to manifest. "Reality is not a straight line. Every passing moment is a chance for a new offshoot, a new variation," he explains. "In fact there are more realities than you can possibly fathom. An infinite number of what if's."
Disney+'s Loki expanded upon the concept of a MCU multiverse through the Time Variance Authority, which monitors all of time for potential branches and Variants that disrupt the "Sacred Timeline." However, the organization's true purpose, according to Jonathan Majors' He Who Remains in the season finale, is to prevent any Variants of himself from escaping and taking control. When Loki's female Variant Sylvie killed him, this triggered multiple branches to extend from all across the Sacred Timeline, resulting in the multiverse.
Wright appears in person in the clip to explain the scope of Uatu the Watcher's powers and that he's capable of observing the entire multiverse. The actor's speech is accompanied by both footage of classic Marvel Cinematic Universe scenes with a twist, such as Korath recognizing T'Challa's Star-Lord by name or Tony Stark getting saved in Afghanistan by Killmonger. Additionally, the trailer features Peggy Carter being reprimanded by an army superior who claims "women aren't soldiers," only to show her undergoing Steve Roger's super-soldier treatment while the surrounding lab is on fire.
Other animated clips tease multiple unexplained What If...? narratives, from Tony Stark collapsing in Iron Man 2's donut shop to brief shots of characters like Yellowjacket and the Destroyer armor. Storylines foreshadowed in previous teasers include a Doctor Strange-centric narrative, a Marvel Zombies-inspired world and Loki bringing Asguardian armies to Earth. Season 1's episode count will consist of nine episodes, with what was originally a tenth episode pushed back to What If...?'s second season due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. According to executive producer Brad Winderbaum, there won't be a definitive What If...? runtime per episode.
Created by A.C. Bradley, What If...? premieres Aug. 11 on Disney+. New episodes will air Wednesdays.
