Legends of Tomorrow Just Bid Constantine Farewell | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episode 14, "There Will Be Brood," which aired Sunday on The CW.

The Legends of Tomorrow have just lost another valuable member of the team. A long time member of the Arrowverse and star of his own series, John Constantine died while trying to restore his magic, after losing it midway through season 6. His death was imminent, as the Legends of Tomorrow Comic-Con@Home panel revealed that Matt Ryan will be playing a different role on the series next season. Despite that, the journey that led up to John's death was heartbreaking, and at the same time some of Ryan's best work as the character.

Following the events of "The Satanist's Apprentice," where John Constantine was stripped of his connection to the magical realm in order to stop Aleister Crowley from killing the Legends, John became desperate to regain his magic. While he tried learning magic from scratch with Astra, his slow progression caused him to look for alternative methods. He convinced Gary Green to tell him about the Fountain of Imperium, an alien artifact capable of not only restoring his magic, but overpowering him as well. John found the Fountain with Spooner's help, but it deemed him unworthy to drink from, leaving him with no more options. However, John came into possession of a potion made by Crowley that gave anyone a magical boost for a short period. He used the potion until its side effects became too big to ignore.

John became addicted to the power trip and as a result he turned more impulsive and quick to anger. He tried to go clean for Zari, but he was too far gone at that point, and he relapsed after Bishop offered his assistance. Bishop had a way to fool the Fountain into believing John was worthy by implanting him with a slight DNA modification that would make him appear like a helpless child. When John reached the Fountain, he knew Bishop would want to use the modification, so he ended their partnership by injecting himself with it before Bishop could have the chance to take it for himself. While the injection appeared to work at first, John soon fell to his knees in pain. Bishop then revealed that he knew John would do something foolish, and so he added some poison to the injection, killing the former Master of the Dark Arts.

As Bishop ran away, John laid on the ground, taking his final breath. Astra approached him and begged him to fight, but it was no use. John apologized for the way he acted and named Astra his biggest regret, but confessed she reminded him a lot of her mother and admitted he was proud of the woman she'd become. With that, John Constantine took his final breath, and left the mortal plane.

John Constantine was the lead of his own series, Constantinethat aired shortly before the Arrowverse began. He made his debut in Arrow Season 4 Episode 5 "Haunted" before eventually taking up residency on the Waverider. While his death is heartbreaking, Matt Ryan will remain on the show, portraying Dr. Gwyn Davies, a 20th century scientist who will assist the Legends while they are stranded in time.

Until then, the Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 finale airs Sunday September 5th on the CW.
