Meet a Vampire Astronaut in the New Trailer for The Moon, Laika and the Bloodsucking Princess

The anime adaptation of the light novel The Moon, Laika and the Bloodsucking Princess (Tsuki To Laika To Nosferatu) has released its star-studded first trailer, which features voice acting from Neon Genesis Evangelion's Megumi Hayashibara and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn's Kouki Uchiyama.

The dramatic new trailer introduces the series' two lead characters, the vampire Irina Luminesk, and her military handler, Lev Leps. Irina is played by veteran voice actor Megumi Hayashibara, who played the role of Rei Ayanami in the recently concluded Neon Genesis Evangelion series, as well as Faye Valentine in Cowboy Bebop. Lev is voiced by Kouki Ichiyama, who is best known for portraying the villain Tomura Shigaraki in My Hero Academia, as well as the heroic Newtype pilot Banagher Links in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.

The Moon, Laika and the Bloodsucking Princess tells the story of the space race in an alternate timeline where vampires exist and the world was divided between two super powers, the Federal Republic of Zirnitra and the United Kingdom of Arnack, following the end of World War 2. The Republic of Zirnitra will do anything to beat their rival nation to the moon, so in order to expedite the development of their space program, the country captures and uses vampires as test pilots for their experimental and dangerous prototype rocket ships. The human Lev Leps, who dreams of going into space himself someday, is assigned to train and monitor the captured vampire, Irina. Despite Irina's mistreatment at the hands of the government, the two form a bond as they both share similar dreams of escaping from the world.

The story began as a series of sci-fi light novels by author Keisuke Makino, which featured art by illustrator Karei, and were first published in 2016. The novels were then adapted into a manga by artist Sojihogu, which began serialization in 2018. The anime series is being produced by studio Arvo Animation, which also produced 2020's Monster Girl Doctor. The series will feature a score composed by the acclaimed Yasunori Mitsuda, who is best known for creating the soundtracks to video games such as Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenoblade Chronicles.

The Moon, Laika and the Bloodsucking Princess will premiere in Japan this October. The series has not been licensed for an international release yet.
