The episode sees a Jade Wisp, one of Sonic Colors' magical alien NPCs, relaying the story of how it was captured by the nefarious Dr. Eggman. Trapped in the mad scientist's lair, the wisps are being experimented on in an effort to siphon their innate power. As the episode progresses, the Jade Wisp is freed by a band of adventurous allies. While many wisps escape, Metal Sonic manages to recapture a few stragglers, continuing Eggman's tests.
Upon learning that Dr. Eggman is still experimenting on the wisps, the Sonic and his best friend Miles "Tails" Prower spring into action to thwart the villains. Be warned, the episode ends on a cliffhanger and Sega has yet to reveal the release date of Part 2. Fans can watch Rise of the Wisps for free on YouTube.
While the Jade Wisp will make its first appearance in Sonic Colors: Ultimate, fans of the Blue Blur will recognize several familiar creatures. The Yellow, Blue, White and Green Wisp from the original Nintendo Wii release of Sonic Colors are all visible throughout the animated short.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate is the remastered and improved version of one of the franchise's most beloved games. Fans of the original Sonic Colors can expect the same game but with improved graphics and added mechanics. Players can zoom around the world in 4K at a smooth 60FPS as they take in the overhauled lighting system and updated textures.
Sonic Colors: Ultimate also adds a new game mode, "Rival Rush," where players compete against Metal Sonic, explaining his inclusion on the Rise of the Wisps. Fans can also expect customizable controls, unlockable cosmetics, new power-ups and a remixed soundtrack.
Beyond Rise of the Wisps, SEGA is also working on Sonic Prime, a new animated series, in collaboration with Netflix. While little is currently known about the adaption, leaked concept art suggests that the show will be dealing with some kind of multiverse-based storyline. Sonic Prime is scheduled to launch in 2022 and will feature 24 episodes.
As for Sonic Colors: Ultimate, fans won't have to wait much longer. The hedgehog's latest adventure zooms onto PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC (via the Epic Games Store) on Sept. 7.
