My Hero Academia: Deku And 9 Other Anime Heroes Who Inherited Their Powers

Every individual, in fiction or in real life, is influenced by their genetic background. For some, it's a simple matter of having green eyes or blonde hair. But in anime, nothing is quite so simple.

In the famous franchise My Hero Academia, Quirks are passed down from parents, mutating with every generation. For the main character, Izuku Midoriya, things get even more complicated, as he inherits a Quirk from his mentor, All Might. One for All changes the young hero's life, just like every other inherited ability influences other characters in his shoes throughout anime and manga.

10 Deku Inherits One For All from All Might (My Hero Academia)

Despite being born Quirkless, Deku's dream is to save people with a smile. His courage earns him the attention of the Symbol of Hope, All Might, who makes him his successor.

But passing on the Quirk isn't easy. Deku has to undergo grueling physical training to prepare himself for the process, and even after All Might gives him the Quirk by having Deku eat a strand of his hair, the young hero-in-training struggles to master the ability he wasn't born with.

9 Shoto's Half-Cold Half-Hot Is A Fusion Of His Parents' Quirks (My Hero Academia)

All Quirk users are influenced by genetics, but Shoto Todoroki's case is particularly important. His father, the Pro Hero Endeavor, is obsessed with surpassing All Might. Unable to do so on his own, he attempts to create the perfect Quirk through an arranged marriage with Shoto's mother, Rei.

Shoto's Quirk, Half-Cold Half-Hot, is indeed very powerful, but it comes at too high a cost. His mother loses her mind and his older brother turns to villainy because of Endeavor's abuse.

8 The Royals of Paradis Inherit the Founding Titan (Attack on Titan)

In Attack on Titan, the members of the Reiss royal family possess the most dangerous ability of all: controlling other Titans. By using the Founding Titan, King Fritz was able to wipe the memory of his Eldian subjects, making them believe they were the last remnants of mankind.

The skill was later passed on through King Fritz's bloodline, though each inheritor was bound to Fritz's will. When it reached Frieda Reiss, the Founding Titan was stolen by Grisha Yeager, who later passed it on to his son, Eren. At first, Eren was unable to use the skill without touching a member of the royal family, but in the last arc of the manga, he was able to channel the abilities of the Founding Titan as he saw fit while going through with his plan.

7 Rin Inherits His Abilities From Satan Himself (Blue Exorcist)

The main character in the anime Blue Exorcist, Rin Okumura is the son of Satan. He was raised by the priest and exorcist Shiro Fujimoto along with his twin brother, Yukio.

Rin's abilities are sealed within the sword Kurikara, but when he unsheathes it, he's able to manifest his true potential. Rin can summon powerful blue flames, and he possesses superhuman strength and regeneration abilities. Despite being half-demon, Rin is determined to use his inherited abilities to defeat his biological father.

6 Sorcerers Pass On Cursed Techniques Through Their Bloodlines (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Jujutsu Kaisen takes place in a world where sorcerers use their special skills to hunt cursed spirits. Through jujutsu, sorcerers manipulate their cursed energy, manifesting as special techniques and spells.

The most powerful sorcerer families pass on their prized techniques. Examples include the Cursed Speech technique of the Inumaki family, the Blood Manipulation technique of the Kamo family, and the Limitless technique of the Gojo family. The latter is a trademark of fan favorite Satoru Gojo.

5 Code Users Grant Immortality To Their Contractors (Code Geass)

In Code Geass, the bearers of a "code" are immortal. They also have the ability to form contracts with other people, granting them abilities known as Geass, the power of the king.

The powers evolve with time and use, and once they mature, the contractor is able to inherit the code from its original bearer. This is C.C.'s main goal throughout the anime, and she offers the Geass of Absolute Obedience to Lelouch in the hope of finally being free of the curse of her immortality.

4 Kings Can Inherit Their Abilities From Their Predecessors (K)

The power of kings comes in different forms and can have more than one origin. In K, it stems from a mysterious artifact called the Dresden Slate. Through the secrets of the Slate, the seven kings are granted auras of power, each of them different. This ability comes at a high cost, as the kings manifest a massive Sword of Damocles which deteriorates with time.

The Red King Mikoto Suoh was able to manipulate flame and had powerful offensive skills. When his Sword of Damocles nearly collapsed, the Blue King was forced to kill him. He passed on his power to his clansman, the young Anna Kushina.

3 The Vers Royals Pass On Aldnoah Through Their DNA (Aldnoah.Zero)

In Aldnoah.Zero, the first humans who reach Mars find the remnants of an ancient civilization. Dr. Rayregalia Vers Rayvers is recognized as the rightful heir of the heir of Aldnoah and receives the activation factor, which he passes on to his heirs. The ability is bestowed onto the Martian Knights, but it can also be shared through spit and blood.

Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia does this with the main characters of the story, Slaine Troyard and Inaho Kaizuka. The Vers Empire uses this technology in its war against Earth, leading to the destruction of the moon.

2 Avatars Reincarnate To Protect Peace And Harmony (Avatar: The Last Airbender)

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is separated into four different nations, each of which is particularly attuned to one of the four elements: water, earth, fire, and air.

Powerful beings with a connection to the Avatar Spirit, the Avatars are the only ones who can bend all four elements. Upon the death of an Avatar, their soul reincarnates in a different nation to continue their duty. They have a connection to their past lives, although this skill can change or be damaged, as evidenced by Avatar Korra.

1 The Ten Master Clans Possess and Protect The Strongest Magic In Society (The Irregular at Magic High School)

In The Irregular At Magic High School, society itself rotates around the use of magic. It comes as no surprise that individuals with powerful magic are better seen than others, just like in My Hero Academia.

Genetics is also a factor, and the ten master clans — the most powerful families in Japan — seek to preserve and increase their influence by intermarrying. An example of the result is Masaki Ichijou, the Crimson Prince. With his ability, Rupture, he's able to defeat countless opponents. He loses to the protagonist of the anime, Tatsuya Shiba, but that's only because Tatsuya is a living weapon.
