This Dress Made Out of Comics Takes Fashion to a Whole New Level

A dress made entirely out of comic books went viral on Reddit.

Posted to Reddit by user katza479 in July, the dress is made entirely from collaged comic book pages that have been arranged by color into a rainbow gradient. According to the artist, the comics used are a mixture of DC and Marvel, including pages from Spider-Man, Superman, Batman, Hellboy, Deadpool, Captain America and more. When asked how they got the dress to get the rainbow color, katza479 said that the most difficult part of the design was "separating the pages and images into [color] families." More images of the dress, as well as the process that went into making the garment, are available on the artist's imgur.

The dress was created entirely with paper that the artist "treated as fabric as much as I could." They said, "I modge-podged the pages to brown paper, then stapled the sections together like I was sewing them, then pressed and glued down the seams," and then sprayed the finished product with a glossy varnish.

"Part of this was also finding a good use for all the comics I've accumulated because it breaks my heart to just throw them away," the artist said in the comments. "Taking parts of them to make a spectacular whole felt a little better then strait trash." katza479 further explained that much of the comics used were doubles and finds from Free Comic Book Day.

"I [love] using comics for collage art. They're very colorful and normally very readily available and overproduced. I get like 30 on free comic book day alone," they said, also mentioning that among their extensive collection of comics, both sealed and actively read, was "a pile of comics I saved from the trash over the years, and this felt like a better use then dust bunny play structure."

According to katza479, the dress is mostly an art piece as opposed to a wearable fashion statement. Posted on July 6, the post currently has over 220 comments and has been 95% upvoted on Reddit.
