NCIS: What Is the Perfect Ending for the Hit Show? | CBR

NCIS is setting the stage for Season 19: Filming has wrapped on the first couple of episodes, and the premiere date is less than a month away. With all of the changes after last season and some new actors coming in, NCIS is going to look a lot different when the flagship series hits CBS on its new night this fall.

Considering all the new faces, NCIS might be trying to revamp to go on another long run, so it’s feasible that nothing is going to change in the near future. Even so, the show has felt just a little bit off since Tony left, and now with Gibbs taking a reduced role, NCIS' eventual ending could be on the horizon.

With that said, it’s a good time to think about what a possible ending could look like, and the topic was recently a matter of discussion on a reddit thread. Some users were not impressed by the question’s premise and thought that NCIS should continue on indefinitely, regardless of who is involved. However, others seem to believe that the end is nigh. One user thought that Season 19 was going to bring the inevitable ending while others were holding out hope of making it all of the way to a Season 22, so that the show could end on its five-hundredth episode. One user even humorously added that fans have to see how in the world Gibbs gets the boats out of his house in the series finale.

One particular suggestion, though, is far and away the best option. The user states that the heroic death of Gibbs would be the only logical ending for the show. However, the most important part is that as he dies, or at his funeral, “we see him finally reuniting with all the loved ones he lost during the series starting with his wife and daughter,” then moving on to all of the agents that he worked with over the course of the show. It would be a simple ending, but it would encapsulate the journey so well. After all, NCIS has always been about how Gibbs would do anything for his family and his team, so getting to see him reunite with everyone on-screen would be a fitting and heart-felt conclusion.

This would be the perfect ending for NCIS, but it would still leave the door open for the stories to continue in a whole new way – now starring Special Agent Timothy McGee as the lead agent of his own NCIS: DC team. As a nod to Mark Hamon’s Gibbs, the branding should be changed to resemble a spinoff, but nothing would have to change.

A similarly fun idea would bring back Tony and Ziva to work with McGee after Gibbs retires or dies. Those three were the heart of the NCIS cast for multiple seasons and could easily lead a spinoff of their own. So, even if the main show NCIS does come to an end in the near future, the NCIS franchise will hopefully carry on for many years to come.
