The Witcher: Season 2 Forces Yennefer to Form Unlikely Alliances

In the season finale of Netflix's The Witcher, Yennefer seemingly vanished after single-handedly decimating the invading Nilfgaardian forces. In Season 2, the sorceress returns, and will apparently seek aid in surprising places.

Speaking at a Witcher panel, star Anya Chalotra teased Yennefer's upcoming journey in Season 2 and, though she did not divulge any specifics, the actor did say that she will make "unlikely alliances" that will "really change her." It is uncertain who these new allies will be and how she will end up fighting alongside them.

When audiences last saw Yennefer, she had unleashed an inferno upon the Nilfgaardian army, only to disappear from the battlefield. Stills released by Netflix for Season 2 showed the sorceress in chains and a recently released trailer confirmed that Yen has been captured by Nilfgaard's forces, under the command of her nemesis, Fringilla Vigo.

Interestingly, when filming for Season 2 began in February 2020, it was reported that Chalotra was spotted on set as Yennefer, surrounded by elves. At the time, it was known that actor Tom Canton was filming scenes as Filavandrel of the Silver Towers, surrounded by elves in a forested location, seemingly implying the introduction of the Scoia'tael faction from Andrzej Sapkowski's novels.

In The Witcher books, the Scoia'tael are a guerilla faction of elves and other members of the Elder Races, fighting against humans to retake the Northern Kingdoms. More stills from the set of The Witcher, released later in 2020, appeared to confirm the faction's presence in the upcoming series.

Season 2 of the Netflix series is set to adapt the events and characters of Sapkowski's Blood of Elves, which introduced the Scoia'tael. In an effort to liberate the non-humans, the Scoia'tael formed an allegiance with Emperor Emhyr of Nilfgaard, who made Francesca Findabair Queen of Dol Blathanna. Set photos have shown that Findabair will appear, as well as Filavandrel and Toruviel, who both made an appearance in the Season 1 episode, "Four Marks," leading a small group of elves.

It should be noted that it is uncertain whether or not the Soica'tael are indeed the allies Chalotra teased for Season 2. The only details that have been confirmed are Yennefer's association with elves and her encounter with Ciri, confirmed through photos from the set. This is in line with the events of Blood of Elves and Time of Contempt, which sees Ciri training under the sorceress, some time after she winters at Kaer Morhen, training in the ways of the witcher with Geralt, Eskel, Lambert, Coen and Vesemir.
