Since its announcement, Spider-Man: No Way Home has been the subject of countless theories. Thanks to recent events like the multiverse being born in Loki, some theories have a strong foundation, like the film being a live-action Spider-Verse. However, others come off as more outlandish, like saying Peter Parker will be in prison for most of the movie. In the vast plethora of theories, there is one that could potentially come true, and it involves a classic Spider-Man taking a turn to villainy.
The Amazing Spider-Man franchise isn't as beloved as Sam Raimi's trilogy or as integrated into a larger universe as Jon Watts' films. Still, it does feature amazing chemistry between Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker and Emma Stone's Gwen Stacy. As a result, her death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hit audiences and Peter hard. While Parker eventually bounces back, Spider-Man: No Way Home could see him trying to find his lost love through the multiverse by any means necessary.
By showing this Peter the endless possibilities of the multiverse, his mind could turn to the possibility of being reunited with Gwen. As he scours the multiverse for her, he could open countless doors, like Ghost Spider being introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he could also cause untold damage to the timelines. By trying to find any variant of Gwen to take back home, he could risk exposing the multiverse to the limitless enemies in each reality. This wouldn't be the first time Peter endangered all of reality out of emotion, either.
In Spider-Man: The Animated Series, a group of Spider-Men travel to a reality where a clone of Peter Parker bonds with the Carnage symbiote to become Spider-Carnage. Sadly, rather than turn the symbiote into an ally, he succumbs to its influence. As Spider-Carnage, his goal was to destroy every reality as revenge for the losses he sustained, and it took a living Uncle Ben to bring him to his senses. While Peter isn't an inherent villain, his emotions leave him vulnerable to corruption. As he looks for Gwen, a similar corruption may affect Garfield's Spider-Man.
What makes any Spider-Man a threat is his laser focus and determination to accomplish what they set their mind to. In this case, should Garfield decide he will find Gwen, there aren't many that can stop him. With their immense strength and intelligence, even other Spider-Men would find it difficult to corral one of their own.
To make matters worse, with the Time Variance Authority in chaos after the Loki Season 1 finale, there is no one to help capture the rogue variants. Their best bet is the likes of Doctor Strange and other Spider-Men, who are equally as unprepared to navigate the multiverse and stop a rogue Spider-Man. Even worse is if he manages to find Gwen, and she either never loved him or knew they couldn't be together. With his heart broken yet again, he may fly off the handle and embrace the rage and sadness within him, becoming a full-blown antagonist.
With no confirmation for Garfield's involvement and many rumors surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home, this theory serves as another potential situation that could take place in the upcoming film. However, considering Spider-Man's dangerous and destructive decisions he's made out of love, it's not too far out of the realm of possibility. Garfield's Spider-Man has suffered the most tragedy out of all of the live-action Spider-Men; therefore, to travel the multiverse to find Gwen makes sense, but the real test will come if he has to choose between saving reality or her.
Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters on Dec. 17.
