Outer Banks Season 2's Ending, Explained | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Outer Banks, now streaming on Netflix.

In Season 2 of Netflix's Outer Banks, John B and the Pogues end up on a barge heading to Guadeloupe. They're trying to rescue Sarah from the Cameron family, while dealing with the shocking revelation that Ward's alive after faking his death. In addition, Pope wants the Cross of Santo Domingo back -- as it belonged to his ancestor, revealed to be the freed slave Denmark Tanny -- leading to a brutal series of fights on the ship. With that in mind, let's break down the shocking finale that totally changes the teens' lives.

The Pogues get help from a crew hand, Cleo, an ally John B made in the Bahamas earlier this season, and they take the ship, locking the crew in the hull. Pope's job is to steal the cross, which is worth millions, while John looks for Sarah. Sadly, the crew gets loose, with JJ getting knocked unconscious and falling overboard in a scuffle with the captain.

Luckily, John stops Ward from trying to kill the traitorous Sarah, but decides not to murder him as he chooses love over revenge. They jump overboard into a lifeboat and circle around to rescue JJ and Kiara. Cleo jumps overboard as well, with Pope deciding to cut the cross loose and make an escape himself. Thankfully, they all get on the boat, but while JJ's revived, they've lost the war.

As the cross is about to fall to the bottom of the ocean, Rafe grabs the rope and braces against the ship's edge. He gets the crew to help him, leaving Pope pissed as they pull up the relic. It's made out of diamonds and gold, so in addition to having Tanny's Royal Merchant gold, Ward's family has millions worth of Tanny treasure. The Pogues, though, swear revenge as Pope wants his birthright back.

With Ward nursing his injuries, Rafe admits he'll step up and change his ways. He's going to be the man of the family, buoyed by how he saved the cross and helped protect the gold. He's disappointed, though, as Ward's clearly feeling sad after officially excommunicating Sarah. Rafe promises he'll get her to see the light and return, however, which ties into why he didn't gun the lifeboat down. He wants to impress his dad and bringing her back will garner more approval.

Kildare Island's in disarray as Shoupe's cops address the media over the teens' disappearances. Kiara's parents are putting up missing posters. Pope's dad is in his room, feeling bad he encouraged Pope to hunt for the family's heirloom.

However, the teens are happy, washing up on an unknown Caribbean island. JJ dubs it "Poguelandia" and they celebrate with a fun night, foraging and having a bonfire. John and Sarah reaffirm their love, while Pope teaches Cleo the secret handshake, hinting they might have chemistry after initially fighting on the barge. They make it clear they've got nothing to lose and will make Ward pay.

The final scene has Carla Limbrey, the woman who tried to steal the cross in the first place, arriving in Barbados. The Charleston "kook" threatened the Pogues, and even killed her brother, Renfield, in her mission, only to get betrayed by Rafe, whose family's home held the secrets to finding the relic. The terminally ill woman was left abandoned on the ground at a hangar, confused that the supernatural Christian shroud that was supposed to heal her illness per the lore wasn't inside.

She now enters a seaside cottage at Bridgeport, wondering why the mystery resident there contacted her. It turns out this is none other than Big John, John B's dad who we thought died in Season 1 after being injured and washing ashore on an island. The last scene has him vowing to help Carla get the shroud, but as part of the deal, she has to help his boy. It leaves stunned fans wondering how Big John got off the island, why he didn't contact John and if he knows the dangers the kid's put himself in on the treasure quests the father started in North Carolina.
