WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Titans Season 3, Episode 4, "Blackfire," available now on HBO Max.
Season 3 of Titans has shed a lot lot light into the tragic background of Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites), revealing key secrets that informed why he became so disenchanted as Robin. We found out Bruce made him sign a contract to make fear his "friend" while also training him by leaving the kid in the dead of night at a cabin in the woods to fight wolves. This built up an overly cocky, violent Dick, which explains why he thinks he's better than Bruce and can remedy the Dark Knight's mistakes with the Titans. Sadly, Dick's arrogance has now cost him his greatest asset.
It occurs when Dick gets wind that the Gotham police are transferring Jonathan Crane from Arkham to Blackgate Penitentiary. He's deduced it's a ruse so Jason's mentor, Scarecrow, can be taken as Red Hood wants to be united with Crane again to keep plotting. Dick, unmasked and in his Detroit cop persona, hijacks the transfer and takes the doctor to the cabin to lure Jason in.
It's here that the haughty Dick finds everything backfiring against him. When Crane indicates Bruce should have been more caring towards the boys, Dick makes it clear he doesn't regret the conditioning as the wolf should have been afraid of him. It's why he thinks he's in control right now, seeking revenge after Jason blew Hawk up.
Had he just worked with Barb and the cops, it would have been a different and sanctioned trap, but he thinks he's above the law -- big and bad enough to do it all himself, risking his civilian identity. Unfortunately, it leads to a fight he doesn't predict properly when Jason comes. In the melee, because of Dick's breadcrumbs, maybe thinking Barb would give him leeway, a chopper arrives and Barb orders a sniper to take Jason out. It accidentally hits Dick, but while he's recovered, Jason's escaped.
Dick looks around in the cabin frantically but unsurprisingly, Crane's gone too. He actually got shocked by the invisible electric fence when he tried to run as the ex-Robins fought, but it seems like Jason has indeed nabbed his Scarecrow. Dick's identity is compromised so he'll be a wanted felon, while Nightwing could be in trouble as well.
This places Dick's vigilante movement in jeopardy, but more so, he doesn't have Crane anymore. Scarecrow was the key to figuring out the chemicals Jason made, why he rose from the dead and why he's his madman under the red hood. To top it all off, Jason spilled all Bruce's secrets to Crane, which actually has a selfish Dick frightened as his family's now more exposed than ever due his ego, which proves he really is Bruce's protege.
The first four episodes of Titans Season 3 are available now on HBO Max. Episode 5 will release on Aug. 26.
